South Dakota Attorney General

The South Dakota Attorney General is the Chief Legal Officer for the state of South Dakota. The office has three Major Duties
- to help local and state law enforcement officials to fight crime.
- To represent state officials in legal manners.
- To enforce consumer protection laws in the state.
In South Dakota the Attorney General approves the language of the initiative or referendum that will appear on the ballot.

The Office of the Attorney General of South Dakota is made up of seven divisions

Ballot Measures
In addition to setting the ballot language which must be an "objective, clear, and simple summary" of the measure, the Attorney general also assists the Secretary of State in putting out a voter awareness pamphlets regarding the ballot measures. They also issue opinions about ballot measures at the request of the SOS.
