Information for customers

If you are having plumbing or drainage work done. It's important to always use a licensed plumber and get a Certificate of Compliance from the plumber once the work is finished. Read our tips on hiring a plumber (PDF - 37KB) .

Sydney Water is the regulator of plumbing and drainage in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains regions. That means we work in partnership with the plumbing industry to ensure that plumbing and drainage is of the highest quality.

Our regulatory responsibilities are defined in the Sydney Water Act 1994.

Plumbing and drainage work carried out in Sydney Water's area of operations must comply with the current version of the NSW Code of Practice, Plumbing and Drainage and Australia Standard AS/NZS 3500.

Generally Sydney Water accepts the responsibility, upon notification of a fault, for the maintenance, repair and renewal of the water service pipework from our watermain to the meter. The property owner is generally responsible for the maintenance of the water service from the connection point to our meter.

Disconnection from services

To disconnect from our water and / or sewer service(s) please complete an Application form - unconnected properties or disconnection of services (PDF - 147KB) . Properties that disconnect from our services in the approved manner will no longer be charged for those services.
