Michael Laudrup has parted company with FC Spartak Moskva after their disappointing start to the new season was capped by Russian Cup elimination at the hands of city rivals FC Dinamo Moskva on Thursday.

Karpin role
Having finished eighth in the Premier-Liga last term the Russian Cup represented Spartak's last entry into UEFA club competition in 2009/10 but, having begun the new season with just one win in four games, Laudrup's side were swept aside 3-0 by Dinamo at the quarter-final stage. "Michael Laudrup has been dismissed as head coach due to our recent poor results," the club announced in a statement, adding that general director Valeri Karpin, the former Russian international, will take the reins until a permanent replacement is found, starting with Saturday's visit of FC Terek Grozny. Laudrup and assistant Erik Larsen depart after just seven months at Spartak.
