Amanda Palmer is a rebel with a cause; she fights fiercely for her artistic freedom.
When the musician and singer, who is currently on hiatus from the "Brechtian punk cabaret" band The Dresden Dolls, made a video to promote one of the songs from her debut solo album, Who Killed Amada Palmer, it seems her belly didn't conform to the ideal expressed by a male executive at her label, who apparently explained: "I'm a guy, Amanda. I understand what people like." She fought the label's attempt to slim...
How dare a record company tell an artist how best to represent/deal with their own experience, and especially anything as personal as rape/abortion. And that's an indie label. Oh, the great dumbing down!
Thank god, though, there are artists (writers, musicians, what-have-you) willing to fight to retain their integrity. (Go, Amanda, go!)
I don't even understand the flack about her stomach in the "Leeds United" video. For one thing, it's not even prominently displayed--but from what you do see of it... Is the problem that she's a real woman with a real stomach? The powers that be are going to not show such an awesome video over something as fucking stupid as that?!
I'm glad I am not the only one in love with this woman and what she is doing. Seriously.
I've been listening to the Dresden Dolls for years at this point (one of my first encounters was actually at an SG Burlesque show, when one of the ladies performed to "Missed Me"), and I've never been able to stop.
One Amanda released her album I was not in the least bit let down, and everything she has done has only given me more respect for her.
Hopefully things work out for the best, sadly, people like Amanda are going to have to keep standing up and fighting for a bit longer before Corporation Knuckleheads will get the point.
this girl is amazing... everything about her...even her tummy. but that isnt why she is so talented.
also, the oasis video was perfect. her representation of herself as a teenager was easy to understand as being ironic and as an adult this women proves her strength by not whimpering in a corner about her rape and abortion experience. sadly, a lot of women today can relate to this situation and it is empowering to see someone break the boundaries of what society wants us to feel about it.
It is sickening the way that Amanda and other artists are being censored to sell records. Just because they don't talk about trivial things in their songs and are really reaching into their souls they should be supported fully. Unfortunately the entertainment industry is less about real artistry and creativity and more about making a shit ton of money.
what tummy? it's pretty fucking depressing to think that her size is unacceptable. but, seeing as that's how it is pretty much everywhere, i'm going to go puke up my lunch.
i thought the oasis video was sad...i mean listening to the lyrics but it just made it interesting to hear the music it was going with. i thought it was rad.
I really enjoyed reading that interview, I always knew that Amanda Palmer was something else; I just didn't realize just exactly how cool she is
Here's hoping she can cut through the damn record industry bullshit and continue to produce her music, her way, and the execs be damned!
I fucking love Amanda Palmer and want to have her guitar shredding babies.
What really gets me is that record labels support songs such as "Smack My Bitch Up" but not an intelligent song about circumstances women face today. Fucking idiots.
Love this quote from a reader who saw our story via a link at 3 AM Magazine, and left a comment there:
Hmm. Well, if we’re going to start turning every song about serious or traumatic issues into minor key dirges, we’d better get going - there’s a veritable canon to get through.
I think it's very possible that they didn't support the song simply because it wasn't good. No offense, but this song is pretty awful. Maybe a minor chord would have improved it. I think most of the controversy was created in her mind, there is no way many people gave much thought to this below mediocre song.
