You'd be hard-pressed to find even a handful of rappers who can mention Kobe Bryant and Rene Descartes in the same verse, but that's all in a day's work for MC Lars. Probably best known for his anti-consumerist anthem, "Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock," Lars is back with a collection of new songs that are just as opinionated and just as catchy. OnThis Gigantic Robot Kills, he criticizes trends like greenwashing, anarchist posers, and stereotypical Brooklyn hipsters.
I've met him twice, and he's one of the nicest guys ever. He really seems to enjoy hanging out with the fans and bs-ing with them. I don't really care about his opinions on music, just as long as he keeps giving me free stickers every time I see him.
On the albums title track, MC Bat Commander sings the chorus. He's the lead singer of The Aquabats and made the show Yo Gabba Gabba. I'm pretty sure MC Lars fans and The Aquabats fans are very similar so it's not too odd that he would be supporting them
Lars is fantastic, and this album has been gracing my CD player/iPod since it came out. The fact that he gives such interesting, intellectual interviews is a bonus.
I 've never heard of MC Lars but I'm definately gonna check out his music. As far as hip-hop being ORIGINAL, um NO. Not any more. 30 years ago when hip-hop first got big is was. But not genre of music is ORIGINAL anymore. Everything came from something else. Rock & Roll spawned punk, metal, and alternative. The blues spawed country music and R&B. Disco gave birth to dance music, electronica and yes even Hip-hop. So I don't agree with what MC Lars saying hip-hop is the last, original music that kids are passionate about since NOTHING is original in music anymore. It's all been done before some just have a knack for doing it better.
I saw Lars, Frontalot and YTCrackerz once in a small Coffee shop venue. It was an amazing concert i got to show off my nerd tattoo of an 8 bit pacman armband and they all seemed to really enjoy it. I first ran into them selling their own merch and didn't realize who i was talking to till he asked me my name.... i was star stuck for a minute or 2, it was great and the conversations that i had just made me feel like they were regular guys out having fun. Nerdcore hip hop will hopefully live on so that the nerds will have another path for their futures, yes u might be lame or sit at a computer all day but you can express yourself just as well as any famous artist.
