Maynard James Keenan thrives on the unpredictable. He's famous as the lead singer of two hugely successful, yet almost completely different bands: Tool and A Perfect Circle. His current band, Puscifer, released its first album, "V" Is For Vagina, in 2007, and followed it up with a remix album in 2008.
Earlier this year, the band -- which features shifting lineups, with Maynard as the only constant -- finally revealed its live show in Las Vegas. If you asked him, though, he'd probably say that they...
I'm dying to try his wine because I expect it will be fabulous. Maynard has a way of making everything turn to gold - each in their own way. TOOL, APC, Puscifer, each are individually unique and all of them amazing.
I'm dying to try it too, I'm not much of a wine guy but I've heard some reviews from friends with whom I got similar tastes in that area and they all had great things to say about it.
Great interview though, more serious that most others I read from him so it was quite interesting especially those wine world/music world comparisons.
Great interview. He seemed to really be trying to give answers that addressed the question, but did so in a more philosophical way. Less "rock star"/"wine maker" and more just a person whose lived a lot of life and knows people will actually digest his answers. Maybe he was just in a good mood that day. lol
This, though. Gene. E. Yus!
JH: That's true. I've just noticed that a lot of people are reimagining and rehashing stuff that was around two decades ago, and it doesn't sound that different now than it did then.
MJK: They're looking for the feeling. They're confusing it with the sound of that time, but they're really looking for a feeling. So a lot of people that made those sounds back then and expressed those emotions back then, they laid out a map for particular emotions from that time. So people now, they want to connect. They want to find something that's their voice, and they haven't really had any life experiences to express anything real. They're very sheltered. So they're looking back in time and looking at other people's experiences and expressing theirs.
It was great to meet you, what, 4 years ago in Montreal in that club... I had a good time with you, even if, at that moment, I didn't know who you were or never heard your music.
You aren't full of yourself like the other bands members I had the *bad*luck to meet. Since then, I listened to a lot of Tool and fuck, I so love it, it makes me... feel any emotion you carry with your voice at that moment. The music comes in me, makes me euphoric, sad, angry, happy, it energizes me, then it leaves and I feel empty but tingling all over, like I've been rocked by a gigantic wave or fucked way too good... And I always want more of it. That's the spirit of the artist.
I have loved all three of his bands. I didn't realize when I first encountered Puscifer (on the Underworld soundtrack) that it was MJK, but when I learned that it made perfect sense.
