Co-curricular Activities

CCA Guidelines

Introduction

Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) in school plays a significant role in the development of students. They have always been an integral part of the school curriculum and complement the formal education by helping in the development of the whole persons.

Aim

CCA inculcate sound moral values in our students. They build strength of character and foster camaraderie. They cultivate healthy habits, and instill aesthetic and cultural appreciation in our students.

Policy

CCA participation in school is compulsory for all students in secondary schools. To enable pupils to have an all-round education, all students are expected to take part in at least one CCA from the 4 groups, namely, Sports and Games, Uniformed Groups, Performing Arts, and Clubs and Societies.

Students may participate in more than one CCA. Points are awarded for students’ participation in a second CCA at school representation level or higher.

Students who are keen to experience the different CCA offered in school may opt for the change at the beginning of each academic year. In such cases, the marks awarded for the previous CCA would be credited to the students’ new CCA. However, this does not apply to pupils in the mandatory CCA.

School Band, NCC and NPCC are mandatory CCAs for all secondary schools. Pupils in these CCAs are not permitted to change their CCA.

Pupils are encouraged to pursue and specialise in one core CCA. They may change their CCA only at the beginning of the new academic year. The marks awarded for the earlier CCA can be credited to the new CCA.

Points are awarded for participation in the main CCA with at least 75% attendance rate.

Admission to Pre-University Courses, Junior Colleges And Polytechnics

For admission to the 3-year pre-university course in a centralised institute or Pre-U center, CCA grades may be used as I of the subjects to meet the entry requirements.

For admission to junior colleges the minimum entry requirements remain unchanged. Nevertheless for admission to junior colleges effective from 1998, bonus points will be awarded for achievements in CCA to give students an advantage in gaining admission to a junior college of their choice.

      • Students who obtain an ‘A’ grade in CCA will be given 2 bonus points, while those who obtain a ‘B’ or ‘C’ grade will be given I bonus point.
      • This is similar to the bonus point system applicable for passing the Higher Mother Tongue languages at ‘0’ Level and for school affiliation.
      • The total number of bonus points a student can use including bonus points for CCA will be capped at 4 points

For admission to polytechnics from 1998 students who meet the requirements for admission to the polytechnics can also use CCA bonus points for competing for places.
