In his Budget statement yesterday the Chancellor announced further help for businesses facing difficulties in paying their tax. From 22 April 2009, any viable business anticipating making a trading loss in the current tax year will be able to have the anticipated loss taken into account as part of any rescheduling of its Corporation Tax or Income Tax payments.

In line with the government's commitment to support a robust and stable carbon market, HM Treasury today published the Community Emission Trading Scheme (Auctioning of Allowances) Scheme 2009. This replaces the Community Emission Trading Scheme (Allocation of Allowances for Payment) Scheme 2008. The Scheme sets out how the UK will conduct auctions of carbon allowances and the terms governing participation in auctions during Phase II of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

The Office of Fair Trading has imposed requirements on Citifinancial Europe plc (Citi) after its terms and conditions had wrongly claimed it did not share joint liability for overseas credit card transactions. Under the requirements Citi will invite those consumers who feel they may have been misled, and think they have a claim, to contact them.

A series of reforms aimed at creating simpler and easier access to geographical data were announced by Housing Minister Iain Wright today. The Government has published a new strategy for the Ordnance Survey, the business responsible for the national mapping of Great Britain, which will improve ease of access to geographic data and services for both commercial and non-commercial use.

HM The Queen has appointed Fiona Elizabeth Barrie to be a District Judge (Magistrates' Courts) on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Jack Straw MP. The Right Honourable The Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales has assigned her to the South Eastern Circuit, based in the Greenwich, Bromley, Bexley and Woolwich Group of Courts with effect from Monday 18 May 2009.
