[edit] Is Bermuda in the Caribbean?

Cantus has reverted my change to Template:West Indies in which I removed Bermuda on the grounds it isn't in the West Indies, with the message (See World book 2002). I'm not entirely sure how to do as you advise, as the World book 2002 has now been superceded on the CIA web site by the 2004 edition. Certainly looking Bermuda up on the 2004 edition reveals no reference at all to the words 'west indies' on the web page. Even if it did, I would have to say that the CIA had got it wildly wrong on this one. Just take a look at a decent world atlas; Bermuda is about the same distance from the Canary Islands (off the coast of north Africa) as it is to the nearest Caribbean island (which is a toss up between the Bahamas and Cuba at about 1000 miles). The nearest continental landfall is somewhere in North Carolina (at about 500 miles), and the supply ships normally run from New York. The climate is North Atlantic (you wouldn't really want to take a holiday in Bermuda in winter) and from personal experience the locals do not think of themselves as Caribbean. Please reconsider. Thanks. -- Chris j wood 23:39, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

This was a misunderstanding. User:Romanm added Bermuda on July 10. Bermuda was never listed in World Book 2002 as a dependency in the West Indies. Sorry for the trouble. --Cantus 06:46, Sep 6, 2004 (UTC)

Why is Bermuda back on here? Is it, or is it not in the Caribbean? Geographically, no it's not in the Caribbean Sea, but then it is included in the Caribbean Community. Is there a definitive answer? Joe I 06:30, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

It was added by a vandal, in fact, whose only other contribution to Wikipedia was declaring that Heidi Montag was not a television personality, but a "whore". Membership in CARICOM has nothing to do with anything, so are several continental South American countries. Bermuda is located about 1,000 miles from the Caribbean.199.172.207.171 (talk) 16:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] GITMO

Guantanamo Bay is NOT a US dependency! Gitmo is under a long-term lease the USA signed with Cuba many moons ago. According to the CIA:

[The] US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay is leased from Cuba and only mutual agreement or US abandonment of the area can terminate the lease [.]

This is not the same as WSBA/ESBA. Because of this, Gitmo has been removed from the t/p. - Thanks, Hoshie 23:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Standardization suggestion - please contribute!

A suggestion for a standard approach to the naming, titling and sections of this and similar templates has been made here – please visit and share your thoughts!  Thanks, David Kernow (talk) 03:27, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] recent edit

Here are the changes I have made:

I have removed Martinique and Guadeloupe from this t/p. As overseas departements and regions of France, they are a part of the whole. I have also removed Serranilla Bank and the Petrel Islands. From reading their articles, it seems like both of these places are claimed by the US and other countries in the region. Putting them as a US insular area here seems to me to be POV. - Thanks, Hoshie 19:08, 1 February 2008 (UTC) Navassa is listed as a US territory, but is claimed by haiti. The Falkland islands are claimed by argentina but are a part of the UK. A citizen who commits a crime on Bajo Nuevo or Serranilla Bank would be charged under US law. Therefore i am returning these two territories to the article. XavierGreen —Preceding comment was added at 01:21, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
