[edit] Structure of men's soccer
There are three professional leagues of soccer teams sanctioned by the Professional Division of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF or U.S. Soccer). The top level league is Major League Soccer (MLS). The United Soccer Leagues constitute the lower divisions; the USL First Division is a 2nd division league and the USL Second Division is a 3rd division league. Beneath these three leagues is the 4th division league, the USL Premier Development League, which is an amateur organization. Two other major leagues exist outside the MLS/USL structure: the National Premier Soccer League, which bridges the gap from USL2 to the PDL between levels 3 and 4, and the Pacific Coast Soccer League, which is an elite men's professional league for teams in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and western Canada.

[edit] Structure of women's soccer
The pro division of U.S. Soccer first sanctioned a 1st division women's league in 2001. However, due to overwhelming debts, it suspended operations on September 15, 2003 after 3 seasons in the league. Currently there are two competing leagues, Women's Premier Soccer League and the W-League, part of the United Soccer Leagues. Women's Professional Soccer is to begin spring 2009 as a replacement/revival of the failed league.
