What is PACT ?

The World Heritage PACT, or Partnerships for Conservation Initiative, was launched by the World Heritage Committee in 2002. This initiative was set up for the implementation of sustainable partnerships whose purpose, beyond financial issues, is the development of a dialogue, an exchange, and an interaction between all stakeholders interested in World Heritage Conservation.

The World Heritage PACT objectives are:

  • To raise awareness about World Heritage ;
  • To mobilize sustainable resources for the long-term conservation of World Heritage by addressing mutually agreed upon issues and problems identified as priorities by the World Heritage Committee.

Initiated by the United Nations in 2000, the Global Compact initiative is part of a commitment by the UN system, and which is inspired by the Millennium Development Goals, to foster sustainable development, particularly through environment preservation and partnership building. The international community, as a whole, acknowledges this as a priority.

To meet this, partnerships are based on principles that ensure the integrity of actions taken and the neutrality of positions adopted.

The World Heritage PACT is an international cooperation system between different institutions, organizations and companies which contribute to the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, based on strategic priorities and objectives identified by the Committee. Different actions are set up to safeguard and promote natural and cultural heritage, through the support of the World Heritage Centre.
