Why did you think they're out of place, Cash?

Because the Indiana Jones movies were always plot driven...and special effects...while extraordinary in their day...were secondary. They weren't a neceaasry part of the movie.

(except for melty-face nazi guy)

totally.

This movie is everything you would expect an Indiana Jones movie to be, and nothing more.

Even though its PG-13 and there were lots of kids in the audience, I wouldn't reccomend bringing your kid along.

Have to disagree. It was a change in oevre from the 30's serials to 50's B-sci-fi movie, and Indiana Jones just . . . does . . . not . . . belong in a 50's B movie (not to mention that Speilberg did not get the tone of such a movie right. At all.).

I wanted to love this movie. I really did. But the effects were too smooth (if you're going for an action serial homage, the effects being a little clunky enhances, not detracts, the effect), the story doesn't fit within the Indiana Jones cosmology, and there were too many things thrown into the plot for it to be coherent. It was a chase movie, an action adventure, a swashbuckler, a sci-fi film, a paranormal film, and a Cold-War paranoia film.

To coin a term, this movie suffered from a bad case of Lucas ex machina: The syndrome of some crusty old guy who has long since lost his sense of magic and wonder coming in and fucking with one of my childhood delights. See: Star Wars prequel trilogy and, for a smaller example, the switching of guns for walkie-talkies in E.T.

Edit: I should be clear; it's not a bad film. But this is not an Indiana Jones film.

I had a big grin on my face for the entire movie, right up until the events following the return of the skull. what the hell were they thinking. I'll forgive the monkeys and the vines, and cate blanchette was an awesome campy comic book villain, and that sword fight was exactly the sort of wonderful ridiculousness I was hoping for, but what the flying fuck were they doing with that ending? that was not professional-quality storytelling.

I think this would have made a much better sequel to the X-files franchise than to the Indiana franchise.

It was enjoyable, but, yeah, it wasn't an Indiana Jones movie to me. I think part of what made the first and third movies my favorites was that the plot revolved around something 'real'.

I fucking loved this movie. Holy shit, saw it tonight and wow. I thought it was really good. I would say more, but don't want to spoil it for anyone.

And I totally agree that Shia LeBeouf will be around for awhile. I really enjoy him as an actor.

A modern legend [1] claims that there are 13 crystal skulls worldwide, of which five have actually been found, which have mystical powers and are of ancient origin.

Didn't that legend originate in the movie House II?

Having looked up the plot of that movie, I think my brain has shrunk.

Wait till you see the 4th one...it's up there with Troll 2

and get this, there never was a 'House 3' surreal

umm...House IV was House 3, it's just that since a movie called "The Horror Show" adopted the title of House 3 in both UK and Australia, US producers called the third film House 4 to avoid confusion. So, see, there really is a House 3....biggrin
