I used to be such a Seti nerd I printed out the .pdf file they sent me when I completed 500 work units.

Back when I was a big time Linux geek I used to be into it. Since I've become a Mac head since my Seti days, I kind of stopped. But I still use it from time to time because the CPU usage stops my computer from going to sleep.

I used to run the RSA/DES apps back in 1997 or so, and I also participated in the Mersenne prime search and protein folding for Standford to help find a cure for cancer. SETI@home however never much interested me.

People interested in distributed computing might like to know about folding at home.

Here's an old thread about it.

The SG team is Team 38844.

This is useful research, you could help cure disease and stuff. It's a tiny download, and there is a variety of software for windows, mac and linux.

Is that the same project that is listed with this program?

I joined the group. I am cmp88 and I'm embarrassed by my CPU hrs./Work Unit ratio. Damn old shitty computer!! I'm averaging about five hours for each now.

I've recently become the founder of the SuicideGirls SETI@home group since mycophile is no longer a member of SG.

So I thought I'd resurrect this thread to see if there any SETI@home users, or wannabe users, who aren't in a group, why not join this group and help us promote SuicideGirls.

HA!

Actually, the program is better than ever!

SETI is just one of the tasks you can run on BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) ... you can also do protein folding, climate prediction, participate in the World Community Grid and a whole bunch of other stuff, all within the same module. It's pretty cool.

Use that computer for more than just porn, people!

I've been running Seti and now Boinc since they both came out. One time I had it running on a computer at work, and a guy who was, what's the right word these days, a less intellectually endowed person,

walked by and said "Whatcha doin' now, lookin' fer aliens?"

I still don't think he believed me.

He definitely didn't understand anything I told him on the subject.

Or most subjects, for that matter.
