Arizona signature requirements
From Ballotpedia
The signature requirements in Arizona differ for a initiated constitutional amendment, an initiated state statute, or a veto referendum. [1]
Signatures to qualify initiatives for the 2010 Arizona ballot are due on July 1, 2010.
Year | Amendment | Statute | Veto referendum |
---|---|---|---|
2010 | 230,047 | 153,365 | 76,682 |
2008 | 230,047 | 153,365 | 76,682 |
Basis of calculation
Signatures are required to equal 15% of votes cast for governor in the last election for a constitutional amendment, 10% of votes is needed for an initiated state statute, and 5% is required for a veto referendum.
Currently, since 1,533,640 votes were cast for governor in the 2006 election, these requirements will be in force until the next gubernatorial election, which is in November 2010:
- Signatures required for constitutional amendments are 230,047 (15%)
- Signatures required for initiative measures are 153,365 (10%)
- Signatures required for referendum petitions are 76,682 (5%)
Recall
- To recall in Arizona, 25% of the votes cast in the last election for the official being recalled is required in signatures.
Proposed change
The Arizona Reform the Initiative Process Amendment (2010) proposes to reduce the number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot.
