Nevada Attorney General

The Attorney General is Nevada's chief legal counsel.
The current attorney general is Catherine Cortez Masto, took office in January 2007. Prior to becoming Attorney General, Masto worked as Assistant County Manager for Clark County, and before that, she served two years as a federal criminal prosecutor for the United States Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C. During her tenure as an Assistant United States Attorney, Masto prosecuted criminals for felony possession and distribution of drugs. She also protected the rights of victims from stalkers and batterers.
In September 1995, Masto was appointed to work in Governor Bob Miller's administration. In July 1998, Gov. Miller appointed Masto as his Chief of Staff.
The office is divided into the following divisions:
Bureau of Consumer Protection:Enforces consumer protection statutes; consumer rights education; filing consumer complaints; advocating consumer voice in cases with privately held utility companies.
Civil: largest division of the Attorney General, which is providing legal representation to over 200 state agencies, boards and commissions.
Criminal Justice:Criminal Justice Division is comprised of 4 prosecution units in 4 regional offices across the state. These units are: the Public Integrity Unit, Special Prosecutions Unit, Insurance Fraud Unit and Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit.
Gaming: A large portion of the division's litigation is comprised of disciplinary actions brought against gaming licensees for violations of gaming regulations and statutes, litigating disputes regarding the proper payment of taxes and fees, hearings on the surrender of gaming licenses for non-payment of taxes, and actions to add to the list of excluded persons (Black Book).
Health and Human Services: includes its Divisions of Health Care Finance and Policy (Medicaid), Welfare and Supportive Services, Health, Mental Health and Developmental Services, Aging Services and the Division of Child and Family Services.

Investigations:*investigate criminal offenses committed by state officers and employees
Litigation: It provides litigation assistance and advice to deputy attorney generals in other Divisions handling their own litigation.

Ballot Text and Legality
Once the initiative is qualified for the ballot, the Nevada Secretary of State must draft the ballot as question. Upon consultation with the Attorney General's Civil Division the Secretary will write the ballot as a question and a short summary of the ballot. The office is also obligated to determined the fiscal impact of the measure with Fiscal Analysis division of the Legislative Counsel Bureau. The Secretary then assigns the ballot question a number for the General Election Ballot.
