The Alaska Senate is the upper house in the Alaska Legislature. It consists of 20 members, each representing a district with about 31,347 residents. The districts are identified by a letter of the alphabet, rather than a number as is the more common norm in other states. The senators serve four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Half of the senate is up for re-election every two years.
The 2009 session of the senate goes from January 20, 2009 to April 19, 2009.
Leadership
The Republican and Democratic parties each have ten seats in the 20-seat senate. However, a majority coalition known as the "Alaska Senate Bipartisan Working Group", composed of members from both parties, is the senate's majority coalition. The working coalition consists of all ten Democrats in the state senate, and three of its GOP members, and elects the chamber's leaders.[1],[2]
- President: Gary Stevens, R-Coalition
- Senate Majority Leader: Johnny Ellis, D-Coalition
- Senate Rules Committee Chairman – Senator Charlie Huggins
- Senate Finance Committee Co-Chairs – Senator Lyman Hoffman and Senator Bert Stedman
The three Republicans who are part of the working coalition are Wasilla Senator Charlie Huggins, Ketchikan Senator Bert Stedman, and Kodiak Senator Gary Stevens.[3]
