AD 1

From about AD 1, the 60 million people of the Roman empire experienced profound change.

Rome was no longer a republic; it was ruled by Augustus after his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra. For many, the loss of the republic signalled the death of all Roman ideals – this certainly seemed the case in Pompeii – but the emperor Vespasian would make possible the 'golden age' of the 2nd century. It would be Christianity that would finally transform Rome completely.
