From about AD 1, the 60 million people of the Roman empire experienced
profound change.
Rome was no longer a republic; it was ruled by Augustus after his defeat
of Antony and Cleopatra. For many, the loss of the republic signalled
the death of all Roman ideals this certainly seemed the case in Pompeii
but the emperor Vespasian would make possible the 'golden age' of the
2nd century. It would be Christianity that would finally transform Rome
completely.
