Jay-Z Declares the "Death of Auto-Tune"
"Get back to rap, you T-Pain-in' too much."
Jay-Z, music critic! This past Friday, Sean Carter debuted the Blueprint 3 track "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 show. This is a statement record for Jay, maybe Jay's biggest statement record since he attacked Nas and Mobb Deep on "The Takeover". In bashing the voice-correction tool that's become utterly inescapable on rap and pop radio, Jay's firmly aligned himself with rap's grumpy-old-men camp, snarling a back-to-basics message that actually means something coming from one of the biggest rap stars on Earth.
Jay's long displayed a certain curmudgeonly streak ("This is black hoodie rap," etc.), but he hasn't come out and taken a blatant stand like this until now. Jay doesn't really name names on the track, but he does firmly stake out his position: "Y'all niggas singin' too much / Get back to rap, you T-Pain-in' too much."
5-10-15-20: Fucked Up's Pink Eyes
The man born Damian Abraham on Madness, Sonic Youth, and using indie rock to meet girls.

Welcome to 5-10-15-20, a new feature in Pitchfork News. Here, we talk to artists about the music they loved at five-year interval points in their lives. Maybe we'll get a detailed roadmap of how their tastes and passions helped make them who they are. Maybe we'll just learn that they really liked hearing the "Thundercats" theme song over and over when they were kids. Either way, it'll be fun.
For this edition, we spoke with Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham, aka Pink Eyes, 29.

R.I.P. Jeff Hanson
Singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson was found dead in his home in St. Paul, Minnesota on Friday, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune reports. He "likely died from a fall or other accident," according to the paper. He was 31 years old.
Hanson released three albums for Kill Rock Stars, 2003's Son, 2005's Jeff Hanson, and 2008's Madam Owl. He was known for his high, otherworldly voice.
Kill Rock Stars sent out the following statement on Saturday evening:
"We are deeply shocked and saddened to report that Kill Rock Stars artist Jeff Hanson passed away on June 5, 2009 in his home, a victim of a terrible accident. Jeff has been a part of the KRS family since 2003 when he became the first artist signed to the label from an unsolicited demo.
Jeff Hanson was an amazing artist, a riotously funny person, and a good friend. Everyone at Kill Rock Stars feels that we were privileged to put out his records. We will miss him tremendously. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

Japandroids Sign to Polyvinyl
One of the most out-and-out enjoyable rock records of the year-- Japandroids' head-rush-a-thon Post-Nothing-- is getting a worldwide release on CD and vinyl via Polyvinyl August 4. (The record was released in Canada on Canadian indie Unfamiliar in April.) People around the world will be able to purchase the record digitally when it hits online marketplaces June 9, too.
Pre-orders for the physical version are currently available at Polyvinyl's site. After a medical setback, the Vancouver duo are hitting the road hard this summer, including a set at our very own festival. Click on for all dates:
Sonic Youth Week on Pitchfork.tv!
A week's worth of exclusive Sonic Youth videos, starting June 8.
Sonic Youth are a glorious anomaly: A band who redrew the lines to suit themselves decades ago, but who still manage to find new directions for their own well-hewn aesthetic. They've played as large a part as anyone in shaping the indie rock universe as we know it today.
And the Sonic Youth universe continues to expand. On June 9, Matador will release their 16th album, The Eternal. To celebrate, we're letting them take over the video side of our website. Next week is Sonic Youth week on Pitchfork.tv!
Echo Chamber: Iggy Pop
"Anyone from Smashing Pumpkins to-- what's the one with Fred Durst? There are a million billion of them and people think they're gods, man. I took great pains not to think first because the thing I can't stand is a rock star who thinks he's got brains."
-- Iggy Pop thinks that Fred Durst thinks he's got brains, apparently. (The Sun, via NME)

Charles Hamilton Cancels, Antlers Added to Pitchfork Music Festival
Black Lips and Michael Columbia switch days. Also: Activities!
A few tweaks to report to the schedule for the Pitchfork Music Festival, which jumps off July 17-19 in Chicago's Union Park.
First, some bad news: Harlem rapper Charles Hamilton will no longer be playing the festival. Fortunately, we've got a pretty great replacement: fast-rising anthemic Brooklyn shoegazers the Antlers, who will perform on Saturday. Also, Black Lips have moved from Sunday to Saturday, and Michael Columbia have moved from Saturday to Sunday. The full, updated schedule is after the jump.
Of course, if you've ever been to the Pitchfork Festival, you know there's a ton of stuff to do besides watching bands. After the jump, read all about this year's various extra-musical activities: the CHIRP Record Fair, Coterie Chicago, FLATSTOCK, festival retail, and Rock for Kids.
Also, a reminder: In our brand new Write the Night series, any ticket buyer can vote on which songs the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise will play. But voting closes on June 12, so don't procrastinate on buying your ticket!

If you still haven't heard New Jersey punk rock band Titus Andronicus's Best New Music'd debut album, The Airing of Grievances, there's officially no excuse now. Titus play Brooklyn tomorrow before heading out on a Jersey-palooza trek with brother-from-another Ted Leo. Tour dates below:
Kim Gordon Disses "The Radiohead Model"
"It seemed really community-oriented, but it wasn't catered towards their musician brothers and sisters, who don't sell as many records as them. It makes everyone else look bad for not offering their music for whatever."
-- Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon is not a fan of Radiohead's pay-what-you-want music-selling strategy. (Please don't make us choose between Radiohead and Sonic Youth!) (via The Guardian)
