Charles Hamilton Cancels, Antlers Added to Pitchfork Music Festival

Black Lips and Michael Columbia switch days. Also: Activities! Charles Hamilton Cancels, Antlers Added to Pitchfork Music Festival

A few tweaks to report to the schedule for the Pitchfork Music Festival, which jumps off July 17-19 in Chicago's Union Park.

First, some bad news: Harlem rapper Charles Hamilton will no longer be playing the festival. Fortunately, we've got a pretty great replacement: fast-rising anthemic Brooklyn shoegazers the Antlers, who will perform on Saturday. Also, Black Lips have moved from Sunday to Saturday, and Michael Columbia have moved from Saturday to Sunday. The full, updated schedule is after the jump.

Of course, if you've ever been to the Pitchfork Festival, you know there's a ton of stuff to do besides watching bands. After the jump, read all about this year's various extra-musical activities: the CHIRP Record Fair, Coterie Chicago, FLATSTOCK, festival retail, and Rock for Kids.

Also, a reminder: In our brand new Write the Night series, any ticket buyer can vote on which songs the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise will play. But voting closes on June 12, so don't procrastinate on buying your ticket!

Pitchfork's Ryan Schreiber to Appear on NPR's "World Cafe"

Pitchfork's Ryan Schreiber to Appear on NPR's "World Cafe"

This afternoon, May 21, Pitchfork's fearless leader Ryan Schreiber will appear on the NPR show "World Cafe With David Dye", along with Dave Thompson, author of the book I Hate New Music: The Classic Rock Manifesto.

Unfortunately, it's a radio show, so you won't get to see Ryan's new haircut. (It's a pretty good haircut!) You will, however, get to hear Schreiber, Thompson, and host Dye discuss new music. Given that Ryan does not hate new music, and co-edited a book, The Pitchfork 500, that is all about the greatness of new music, this should be fun.

The show will run on over 200 stations nationwide, and you can use this site to find where and when it'll be playing near you. Or you can listen to the WXPN Philadelphia stream online here; it runs 2:00-4:00 p.m. Eastern time. UPDATE: Due to the WXPN pledge drive, the interview will actually air on Sunday, May 24, at 9pm ET at that link. However, the interview will be archived on the "World Cafe" site shortly.

Thermals, Final Fantasy Added to P4k Fest

Also: Cymbals Eat Guitars, Bowerbirds, and more. Thermals, Final Fantasy Added to P4k Fest

The 2009 Pitchfork Music Festival, taking place at Chicago's Union Park July 17-19, is the living, breathing, sun-shining (fingers crossed!) version of this website you're reading right now. We've got tons of great bands playing, including the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, the National, Grizzly Bear, M83, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Yeasayer, and more. It's a good hang.

And here are some more newly announced bands playing the fest: Portland pop-punk mainstays the Thermals, one man orchestra Final Fantasy, neo-folk act Bowerbirds, recent Best New Music recipients Cymbals Eat Guitars, and a pair of Chicago acts: far-out indie rock duo Michael Columbia and post-punks Killer Whales.

On Friday, July 17, we'll launch the "Write the Night: Set Lists by Request" series, in which four bands will all play fan-selected set lists. Here's how it works: You, the audience, vote on which songs all four bands-- Built to Spill, the Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise-- will play. When you buy your ticket, you'll get a confirmation email. That confirmation email will include a link to a page where you can vote on which songs from each band you want to hear. The bands will tailor their set lists accordingly. As an added bonus, the Flaming Lips will also play some fan-requested songs during their headlining set on Sunday, July, 19. Voting ends June 12.

And get excited for this year's party by watching videos from past years' Pitchfork Music Festivals over at Pitchfork.tv. Highlights from 2008 include Spoon with Deerhunter's Bradford Cox, Animal Collective, Jarvis Cocker, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and Bon Iver. Our 2007 footage features the likes of Girl Talk with Grizzly Bear, Stephen Malkmus, GZA, Slint, Iron and Wine, Of Montreal, and more.

Three-day passes to the festival are sold out, but two-day and one-day passes are still available right here.
