It's been a long time between drinks for the Howling Bells. Ever since they released their eponymous debut album in 2006, critics have been left swooning in their wake, with NME ranking it as one of the top 20 albums of the year, and influential UK sites like Drowned in Sound and OMH Music ranking it in their top 3. And it's not hard to see why.
From Joel Stein and Brendan Picchio's two-pronged attack of razor sharp guitar and bass, to Glenn Moule's vicious drum assault, to Juanita Stein's barely contained hunger and hysteria, to the band's darkly romantic sass and strut, they brought a certain danger, knife-edge thrill and a gorgeous, glittering gloom back to good old fashioned rock and roll, and for that we should be eternally grateful.
Now, in the next few months, their dancecard is beginning to fill up rapidly once again. They are presently in the studio, just wrapping up their second album, a twilt, cinematic opus in the making, with producer extraordinaire Dan Grech-Marguerat, who has engineered some of the most seminal albums of recent times, including Radiohead and Air.
To wet fans' appetites, the band is releasing as a free download single a scintillating taster, "Into the Chaos", through Liberation Music. "Into the Chaos" is the first release to be taken from their eagerly awaited second LP "RADIO WARS" due in March, and it is anything but low-key in terms of scale and ambition, with a dramatic, filmic wall of dizzying strings and widescreen production that boosts the Bells' sound to hitherto unexplored heights.
To coincide with the international release of "Into the Chaos", the band have just completed a run of dazzling shows through Europe and the UK.
