Jesu + Isis = Greymachine

Jesu + Isis = Greymachine

Basic physics: When the frontmen of two of the heaviest bands in the world get together, they are guaranteed to make something extremely fucking heavy.

Jesu mastermind and former Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick and Isis leader Aaron Turner have teaed up to form Greymachine, along with fellow Jesu/Godflesh member Diarmuid Dalton and Head of David's Dave Cochrane. Broadrick and Turner have both been known to maintain a ton of side projects, so it's really no surprise that they'd eventually find each other.

What is surprising is just how obliteratingly noisy and sludged-out the result is. You can download the 10-minute Greymachine track "Vultures Descend" right here, and...holy cats. Even at their most apocalyptic, Jesu and Isis make songs that sound like songs, with riffs and lyrics and stuff like that. "Vultures Descend" is basically an extended formless feedback wallow, along the lines of Broadrick's work as Final. It is not going to be anyone's summer barbecue jam.

"Vultures Descend" will find a home on Disconnected, Greymachine's debut album, due August 4 from Hydra Head. We've got the tracklist below.

The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Summer 2009

The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Summer 2009

Welcome once again to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to upcoming releases! Four times a year, we round up a big ol' list of albums, singles, EPs, and DVDs set to be unleashed over the coming months, hoping to get you pumped about going out and buying records. (You do still do that, right? RIGHT?) This installment covers summer 2009.

Compiling such a list isn't easy in this day and age, with different release dates for digital and physical versions of albums, as well as different release dates for different countries. So we tried to stick with North American physical release dates as much as possible, with exceptions as noted. When an album's North American release date differs from its overseas one, we also made a note of that. Keep in mind that release dates are as slippery as an eel on rollerskates, and any one of these is subject to change at any moment.

News in Brief: Treasure Island, the Donnas, A.A. Bondy, Sondre Lerche

News in Brief: Treasure Island, the Donnas, A.A. Bondy, Sondre Lerche

-- Putting a few bands and a few thousand people on a man-made island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay Area feels like a great idea. And for the third year in a row, that's exactly what the Treasure Island Music Festival will do. October 17-18,  the Flaming Lips, MGMT, the Decemberists, Girl Talk, Beirut, MSTRKRFT, and many more will all take part.

-- Cali bad-girl pop-punk snarlers the Donnas have now existed for a brain-melting 16 years, which means it's now time for a career-spanning compilation. The band will self-release Greatest Hits, Vol. 16, their facetiously titled career-spanner, on July 7. This summer, they'll open for Blondie and Pat Benatar on tour.

-- On September 1, Fat Possum will release When the Devil's Loose, the sophomore album from roots-rocker A.A. Bondy. Bondy will tour with Conor Oberst this month. Fun fact: If you have any A.A. Bondy songs on your iPod, he's probably the first person to show up under "artists". Maybe that was the idea.

-- Sondre Lerche, the Norwegian boy wonder singer-songwriter who wrote all the songs for the god-awful movie Dan in Real Life, will follow up that soundtrack with Heartbeat Radio, his new full-length. Rounder will release the album, which features string and horn arrangements from High Llama Sean O'Hagan, on September 8.

Stars' Amy Millan Preps Second Solo LP

Features Feist guest appearance, Death Cab cover Stars' Amy Millan Preps Second Solo LP

Back in 2006, Stars singer Amy Millan released Honey From the Tombs, an album of statuesque Emmylou Harris-like alt-country that felt a million miles removed from the epic new wave of her other band.

On September 8, Arts & Crafts will release Masters of the Burial, Millan's second solo album. Millan recorded the album in rural Ontario with Broken Social Scene producer/sound engineer Martin Davis Kinack and features guest appearances from Feist, Evan Cranley of Stars, and others.

The tracklist contains a cover of Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark". Millan previously covered "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" on a 2007 KCRW EP; however, it has been re-recorded for the album.

We've got the tracklist and album cover below.

On July 25, Millan will play a free show at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre, and she'll tour this fall.
