New to own this week is Waltz With Bashir, the Academy Award-nominated animated documentary from writer/director Ari Folman. While talking with an old friend, Ari Folman realized that he could remember little of his time in the Israeli Army during the first war in Lebanon. In order to clarify the time during which he served, he set out to interview friends and fellow soldiers, and combined those recorded conversations with animated visuals to create a unique new form of documentary. As Folman's discussions about the war gradually accumulate, the haze begins to lift and his memories start to come back into focus, their surreal qualities only heightened by the film's vibrant animation.
