Eric LaGrange must be awfully restless. With the Romance Novels, Eric & the Happy Thoughts, and now the Cave Weddings, he's toggled his shambolic guitar pop between three bands in little more than a year. On the surface, each seems little more than a nominal shift, but closer inspection reveals subtle nuances: the raucous Sonics-style riffs of his early stuff giving way to the sweetly sad jangle-pop melodies of the best Happy Thoughts material. And now we arrive at yet another summer, soundtracked by yet another Eric LaGrange outfit-- though it'd be a mistake, as their Myspace points out, to interpret it as a mere songwriting vehicle. The page says that Eric doesn't write their songs, but between his warm vocals and immediately familiar guitar lines, it could be mistaken for any of his other projects. The tambourine-beat rhythm, the clear and catchy melodies: it's all there. But there's quite a bit more there, too-- harmonizing vocals and Beach Boy ba-ba-bas, guitar crunch and bouts of frenetic shredding that were all mostly absent from his last group's work. Just check out the breakdown about three-fourths through, the way the cymbals crash with the pulsing guitar just after the 1:40 mark. There's a forcefulness you'd never hear in a Happy Thoughts track, though whether that's for better or worse is a matter of taste. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be an either/or situation, with new material from both bands on the horizon. In the meantime, the Cave Weddings provide a nice LaGrange fix to kick back and relax to.
