The Palm Springs Cell Phone Tax Measure will be on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Palm Springs, California. The tax measure calls for expanding the city's telephone tax to include cell phones and other new technologies. "Other technologies," said city officials, may include computer-enabled voice communications such as Skype.[1]

The city council voted 5 to 0 to place the measure on the November ballot on Thursday, July 23, 2009. City Attorney Doug Holland said that although the measure calls for expanding the types of taxed items, it does not call for a tax increase. In fact, according to city officials, if approved the tax would be reduced from 5% to 4.5%. The measure is a result of the city trying to find new revenue sources to help reduce the city's $12 million budget deficit.[2]
