Adam Mickiewicz University (Polish: Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza) is one of the major Polish universities, opened on May 7, 1919 in Poznań. It is named after the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz.

The university opened on May 7, 1919. For the first 20 years it educated students in law, economy, medicine, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, agriculture and forestry.
Since the moment of its foundation many distinguished scholars from all over the world as well as many outstanding personalities from politics and the fine arts have received the Honorary Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University including Marshall Józef Piłsudski, Marshall Ferdinand Foch, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Ignacy Paderewski, Roman Dmowski, and Witold Hensel.
On May 7, 1919, which marked the 400th anniversary of the foundation of The Lubrański Academy, the Commencement Ceremony of the university took place.
In 1920 famous sociologist Florian Znaniecki founded the first Polish department of sociology at the university. It was one of the first such departments in Europe.
The University was closed by the Nazis in 1939, and reopened as a German university in 1941, which lasted until 1944. The Polish university reopened in much smaller form only after the end of WWII. Until 1955 it was officially named Uniwersytet Poznański (University of Poznań). However, in 1955 the University was named after Adam Mickiewicz, a Polish Romantic poet of the first half of the 19th century. According to reform, in 1950, the Medical Faculty with the section of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Poznań were detached to form an independent school, Poznań University of Medical Sciences.
Among its most famous graduates are the mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine: Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski, and Jerzy Różycki.
While many buildings of Adam Mickiewicz University still remain scattered in areas near the city centre and older boroughs, the entire school is being moved to the Campus in Morasko. As of 2006, Faculties of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry, Geographical and Geological Science have already been moved to the new location.
