[edit] Problem?

Hi,

Do you actually live in Great Bridge? This is currently a large problem that our town is facing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by NotASeaOtter (talkcontribs) 19:35, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi NotASeaOtter, where I live is irrelevant. You're edit [1] publishing phone numbers of alleged 'sex-workers' is against Wikipedia's policies.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 19:42, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi Marek,

as soon as I realized that this kind of information was not the norm in wikipedia, I removed said information to instead be a brief overview of the problems out citizens and city council are facing. i'm new to internet and didn't realize this was against a guideline. now please stop fucking shit up.

[edit] The Vampire Diaries Edit

I have made an edit that was very helpful. The plot section was way longer than it needed to be. The person wrote a whole summary of the series and people don't really want to read that huge paragraph. I shortened it to sum up what the show is about. It is short and to the point. PLEASE STOP CHANGING IT BACK !!!!!!!!!!! Thank you :D —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.230.32.53 (talk) 00:52, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] The Vampire Diaries Edit 2

Please stop changing it back, it's seriously annoying me. Nobody wants to read that huge paragraph so I did them a favor and shortened it down. The paragraph was correct but is just a summary of what has happened in the series. The plot is just supposed to tell you what the overall thing is about, and that's what edited. Everything I wrote is correct because I actually watch the show and know what it's about. PLEASE STOP CHANGING IT !!!!! THANK YOU !!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.230.32.53 (talk) 01:00, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, an edit as drastic as this [2] should first be discussed on the talk page.
You made the same edit 5 times today, got reverted by 5 different users and still carried on reverting.
You have now reverted 7 times, without discussion, ignoring all warnings and left me the above messages.
Please discuss your edit first on the talk page before repeating it again, because as I see it, at least 6 editors do not agree with you.

[edit] How fast is Huggle?

Huggle must be incredibly fast. I've been sitting on the history page of Truman Doctrine, clicking refresh, waiting for 71.248 to vandalize it again. The very moment he did, I clicked "Undo" and "Save" -- only to see you had beaten me to it. I couldn't act any faster than I did and you still beat me to the revert three times running. No matter how fast I thought I was, you were faster. Someone, either you or Huggle, is very quick. 152.16.59.102 (talk) 00:49, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Yes I've noticed that as well. I've often tried to revert using Twinkle or the 'undo' feature, only to find that someone using Huggle has beaten me to it.
I am not sure why this happens. I suppose that the software running Wikipedia reacts quicker to the Huggle software, but I really don't know why this happens...
Thank for you message and your efforts in fighting vandalism on Wikipedia. Cheers -- Marek.69 talk 01:02, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting on The Legend of T

Please note that a user blanking a page they've created is not vandalism. Generally, that's interpreted as a request for G7 speedy deletion. Tag it as such and an admin will delete (of course, if the creator keeps reverting, talk to an admin in person). Thank you! Cheers, Master of Puppets 22:51, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] From Chris O

Dear Marek, Thank you for your message. Yes I am new to Wikipedia and I will appriciate all help I can get. As you have noticed I've started making some minor changes to pages assosiated with Krakow and its cultural institutions. I am working in english as well as in polish version of Wikipedia. [edit] New entry

Marek, I would like to make a new entry for a polish conductor. Could you advise if there is a template I should use? How to add this person to various categories such as a list of conductors? ThanksKgbo (talk) 03:51, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Chris, thank you for you message.
If you're looking for an infobox, then you could try Template:Infobox musical artist
In order to add the category, then if you add the following code to the bottom of the article [[Category:Polish conductors]] and the article will be added to that category.
I hope this helps you.

[edit] Brazil

Hello! Please, I need your help to deal with an issue that has appeared in the article about Brazil. See it in here. Thank you very much. - --Lecen (talk) 19:06, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Lecen, I'll take a look and see what I can do. :-) Marek.69 talk 21:32, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, I don´t know how to deal with the issue by myself. - --Lecen (talk) 01:10, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
I will make a brief summary of the problem: I started to rewrite the section “History” in the article on Brazil. The idea was to improve the text changing the old citations based on websites for books written by several renowned historians. I had already rewritten three subsections without having received complains from other users. In the fourth subsection that deals with the reign of Emperor Pedro II, I received serious complains from user Opinoso who made baseless personal accusations against me for no reason. I sent him a private message asking him to get into a peaceful resolution to the matter, but he simply ignored me and kept with the accusations, attacks and ironic remarks towards me. After that he added untrue information in the subsection. And even more serious: he was not faithful to his own sources and created information that did not exist in the sources, as I managed to prove in the discussion page. - --Lecen (talk) 20:38, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Marek, please take a look at my discussion on the talk page about Brazil. The matter must be settled. The editor need to chose between Opinoso's verson of the history section or mine. Another issue is Opinoso's actions as he fabricate infromation that his sources does not says. That is something that is damaging Wikipedia's credibility as a reliable enciclopaedia. There is no more time for staying neutral, you must pick a side. Mine, his, but please, do it. We must end it. - --Lecen (talk) 00:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi Lecen, I have had a fair look at the Brazil article, and quite frankly I am unsure how to proceed.
I realise that this is a very difficult situation, especially when two editor are so 'sure' that their version is the one that must be used. (Please feel free to correct me/comment if I have misunderstood the situation in any way)
I am reluctant to take anyone's 'side' in this matter as I am no expert on Brazil and I do not think this is the correct way to proceed.
As I can see it you both seem to be getting very upset with each other and focussing your attention on this disagreement.
IMO What you both need to do is take a step back and try to look at the whole picture calmly and in a new way in order to find a version that is acceptable to you both. (I don't know - This may well be impossible)
One thing I think may be useful is if we find some more editors to comment and to start a productive discussion. (Note: We're unlikely to attract new editor to enter into discussion if there's a 'blazing row' going on.) I will try to find out more on this option.(RfC possibly)
I realise this has been going for some time now and that you must be very frustrated. I'll see what I can do and will keep you informed.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 01:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Marek, I apreciate your good mood, but unfortunately, it won´t help. If the problem was something like "Editor A says that history fact happened in X way according to some sources" and "Editor B says that history fact happened in Y way according to other sources" we could try to find a solution. But that´s not the problem. I have improved the original text by adding reliable sources and removing wrong information. All is in there, as I explained carefully. Opinoso, however, disagrees. To prove his point he used sources and created information that his sources did not tell. In other words, he faked information, once again, damaging Wikipedia's credibility as a reliable enciclopaedia. This is not the first time that he does that. What is happening is not a legitimate disagreement between to parties, but an editor that is faking information to prove his personal opinions. All you have to do is see the links I put it and you will understand. --Lecen (talk) 01:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Lecen, you may want to consult Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. You may find something helpful to you there.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 01:43, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Marek, we are trying to settle the matter in the article about Brazil once and for all through consensus. Take a look at the 10 points settlement. I do really recommend you to read carefully the other editor's opinions also. This 10 points method is more simples and faster than having to read the discussion page discussion all over it again. I must also warn you (to be careful) that some of the passages in dispute have already been proved that they have no basis on its own sources (that is, they were fabricated). Thank you, - --Lecen (talk) 20:23, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Help please (Manual of Style)

An editor has made some changes see User_talk:Lidos#Uxbridge_Lido to my first article, but hasn't the time to explain his or her reasons. I understand that embedded bold typeface is not acceptable, but, for example, his new opening sentence

Uxbridge Lido is a lido in Uxbridge, England.

was just terrble grammar, and I've changed it. Do you have a moment to look at this? Many thanks.--Lidos (talk) 20:07, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Lidos, Hmmm, I see what you mean 'Uxbridge Lido' is pretty self explanatory, and you're right about the above wording.
However, you have to be prepared for this sort of thing. Now that the article is in the main space on Wikipedia, anyone can edit it. Although that can be a very good thing, it also has its down-side. Its best to discuss any differences of opinion on the article's talk page and try to resolve any problem in a civil manner. It would be unusual for an editor to have very strong feelings about the above line and refuse to budge. Just try to find an alternative which is acceptable to you both.
Another word of advice. I know Uxbridge Lido is your first WP article, which you created from scratch, but please be aware of Wikipedia's Ownership of articles policy. This can be very hard to observe, especially if you feel someone is ‘…mucking up your stuff’. Just try to discuss it calmly and productively, to achieve a result acceptable to you.
I will try to have a longer look at Uxbridge Lido when I have a little more time. For now, I hope this helps
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 20:34, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks that's most helpful, and I look forward to your "longer look" when you have time.--Lidos (talk) 20:55, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi Marek, I'm collaborating with user:Lidos on the Category:Lidos pages and perhaps you can help with identifying some WP guidance that relates to format of locations of places in the lead? I've re-checked WP:LEAD and skimmed WP:MOS but a section on how to give location hasn't jumped out at me, I admit that I could easily have missed it. Your change on the Uxbridge Lido page reads well but if we are to trim out (possibly) unnecessary address details from all the other lido pages, I would like to point to some part of WP guidance to ensure a clear rationale for later editing consistency and, of course, to make sure we don't have to re-format the leads more than once. Cheers, —Speedoguy (talk) 09:49, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Speedoguy said "Your change on the Uxbridge Lido..." but it was Master Editor User:MRSC who changed the lead sentence.--Lidos (talk) 17:53, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Kgbo, That was quick!
On the subject of proof-reading the article, you could ask a member of WikiProject Poland.
I've had a quick look now. I may be able to help, but not until tomorrow at the earliest as it's very late here.

Marek69,

Thank you for being the first to welcome me to Wikipedia. I hope to contribute in the areas of my interest and grow the knowledge base of this community.

P.S. I enjoyed the cookies.

P.S.S. Do you know how to edit images. I need to update a Map for the Continental Union article, but I don't have a image editing program or the skills required. I'm working to improve the article now, but if you could make the changes to the map to include the Common Wealth of Australia that would be a big help. Thanks man.

Marek69,

Thanks for the welcome and the offer of help. Is there a user you can refer me to who might be able to help update an image? I've been doing a good deal of work on the "Continental union" article and now the world map for the article needs two continents added to it. Namely Australia, and the United States. If you or someone else could assist me in this it would be a big help. I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OrangeCorner (talkcontribs) 19:09, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi OrangeCorner, thank you for the message.
First of all you could contact the user who created the image, and ask them.
If the image you are referring to is File:Continental unions.svg, I believe you can do this yourself, using a graphics editor.
This file has been created from File:BlankMap-World6, compact.svg. If you download that file to your computer, you can then modify it.
Open it in a graphics editor, Microsoft Paint, for example, you can use the 'Fill With Color' feature.
When you are happy you can upload the file back to Wikipedia, preferably with a new filename. (see Wikipedia:Uploading images for more info on uploading.)
If you choose to do this yourself, I would be happy to advise or assist you.
Alternatively, you can find addition help at the Wikipedia help desk.
I hope this is of help. Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 19:48, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Marek69, Thanks for the assistance. I was able to download a graphics editor, and follow your directions in order to properly upload the new map. I reverted your recent edit to the page Talk:Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, because the edit basically blanked the whole talk page, including titles and formatting, and replaced it with your text.
This type of action is against Wikipedia's policies, please see Wikipedia:vandalism.
Another policy worth familiarising yourself with is WP:Soap.
Abiding by these policies will prevent this sort of misunderstanding arising again.

[edit] STOP

I have archived data on a talk page. For some reason, you have taken it on your own to start a revert war. Please stop and leave the archive alone. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.215.5.92 (talk) 03:05, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

The consensus on the talk page was against archiving [3] 3 editors oppose
You have been reverted by 6 separate editors and have received two level-4 warnings for disruptive behaviour.
You seem to have ignored all this, and continued reverting all these editors (same revert, at least 7 times!)
I encountered this situation relatively late in the day, yet you accuse me of edit warring.
I suggest you rethink and stop acting against consensus.
Regards Marek.69 talk 03:24, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Marek, I am not the same user although I agree with him or her in keeping the page clean. The person's rationale is straight forward. In addition, I have added discussion points to the page. [edit] Thank you for the welcome.

Hello Marek Thank you for the nice welcome. I'm an avid reader of Wikipedia, though I try to not add things unless I see something very wrong or missing and have proof to back it up. I also very rarely log in when using Wiki so I read a lot more pages than might show up.

Today, I only logged in because I found something missing on a page and noticed your message. Sorry for my tardiness.

I have a copy of Ian Fleming's "Live and let die" and was looking up the publication data and noticed that the version I have doesn't seem to be listed. My copy is a small hard cover by The Reprint Society from 1956. So I guess I'll go and add it to the information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_and_Let_Die_%28novel%29 If you wish to reply, it may be better to do so on my own talk page (I didn't even know that I had one) Thanks again for the welcome. I noticed that you had made an edit to the page 1/2 Prince on 2009-05-03. So I was wondering if you would be willing to help out some more. The article is in some desperate need of completion and I have been trying my best to work on it. Though, I am fairly new at this and have not been able to get everything in yet. You have blanked this users page 9 times today and received 4 warnings. I have only restored it back.
Blanking someone's users page is against Wikipedia's policies, as you have already had explained.
I suggest you stop your actions as you are on you last warning and risk being blocked for disruptive behaviour.

No welcome is necessary, and my deletion was accompanied by an edit summary which explained my reasoning, after you reverted it the first time. Check again. If you disagree with the removal of the edit farm, perhaps you can do more like explain your reversion informatively. I've posted a statement about the farm on the article's discussion page. --joeOnSunset (talk) 04:25, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi JoeOnSunset, Can I ask what you mean by ‘after you reverted it the first time’? I've only reverted your edit once, as far as I can see.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 04:33, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I made the edit without signing in. After the edit was reverted, I signed in and made the edit again, this time providing a rationale in the edit summary. That edit was then itself instantly reverted. It would only be clear upon inspection that this ws the same person, but nonetheless, my second edit was accompanied by an explanation. Thanks for removing the warning and undoing the reversion. --joeOnSunset (talk) 04:44, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry to do this again, but I have to since you are so good at helping

Marek, I am facing a serious problem with a user called Conte di Cavour. I have recently made some highly praised and complemented edits to lenghten and add valuable content to the article Italy, including quick briefs on its main cities. It was all reliable, not overly factual, helpful to anyone and useful. Obviously Conte di Cavour did not like it, and has paged blanked literally 25% of the page, taking away 13,000 bytes of info, without giving valid reasons, only saying things such as 'too crowded' or 'ugly image', or meaningless things like that. One cannot just revert 13,000 bytes of a page just using that as an excuse. If you want, go and see on the page history, and you'll see that my version was detailed, interesting and helpful. Now, he has just taken it all away, and that is called page blanking. Isn't it true that one just cannot delete 13,000 bytes of info, giving miniscule reasons and deleting info which was valid, verifiable and esteemed by other editors. Help!

[edit] alleged copyright infringement

FORCEONE2000 (talk) 01:55, 5 November 2009 (UTC)hi,my name is derek simmons aka Gee Rock & Tha Cnd Coalition, and i have recently witnessed a copyright infringement documentation written all over my biography, it was said that it came from another site in which they presented the link, and low and behold,it was another one of my many pages on the internet. i dont know why they would deem this a copyright infringement if they checked every piece of info on the other page, they could clearly see that it was of my own doing....it is embarrasing since someone entered it there on my behalf, how do i stop this type of behavior,i have recently emailed wiki a link from my homepage, where my licenses are visible...please assist further.(forceone2000)

Hi Forceone2000, On the Gee Rock & Tha Cnd Coalition article, some instructions relating to copyright have been placed.
One of which reads:
If you hold the copyright to this text and permit its use under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts):
Explain this on this article's discussion page, then either display a notice to this effect at the site of original publication or send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a postal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. These messages must explicitly permit use under CC-BY-SA and the GFDL.
Simply follow these instructions, i.e. send and e-mail to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a letter to the address posted at Wikimedia Foundation confirming that you are the copyright holder, etc. (as above)
I hope this answers your question
If you have already done this, it is just a question of waiting for a reply confirming permission to continue.

[edit] Hofstra edit

I tried to provide a reasonable justification for the edit: that the news item linked to under the article's History section and the adjoining paragraph suffer from severe recency bias - a now non-story from this past year is not a significant part of a university's history over a century. Anyway, I have nothing vested in Hofstra university or its wikipedia page, so you can leave that stuff there if you really think it isn't junk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.205.53.136 (talk) 02:29, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Hello, can I help? Marek.69 talk 05:33, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] I'll explain the case briefly

Look, the matter is this. Over time, I have added valid info on Italy's culture, main cities and etc. I also added a section on Italy's main cities, so people could briefly see how they looked like and what importance they had in the world. This was not too detailed, but not unnecessary, and other editors, such as Ettormo, found it useful. However Conte di Cavour has simply deleted it all, saying "too much info". That is 13,000 bytes of verifiable and praised info blanked for that excuse! Yes, the section was unique to the Italy article, however, also France has a unique section on Law, and so does Spain have a unique section on universities, so what's the harm in having a section which other states do not have?

On addition to that, the article is far blander now that most of the pictures have been deleted. A really important image showing Italy's railway links has been deleted, and he keeps on thinking that sinc the Mona Lisa in France, it is not Italian. Ridiculous! Also, we were working on a project with an editor called Ettormo, and we were considering adding info on Italy's main cities and the grand tour, yet now he has ruined that, made the article clunky and bland, and ruinded hours' work. And, on addition to that, he has not replied to my message, and has not given suffiecient reasons to delete 13,000 bytes (actually nearly 14,000 bytes) of info. I want to see your point of view, and if you agree with me, that'll give me a sufficient reason to rewrite all that has been deleted. I insist that this vital info gets reput inside the article.

Ciao, and reply. Kind regards

Oh, and also, I would really appreciate it if you reply as soon as possible. Of course you'll be busy, but please reply when you've got a free moment. By about 19.00 pm (in Great Britain), I shall update the Italy page as it was before, and list all the reasons on the talk page why it should remain as it was before.--Theologiae (talk) 13:36, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Theologiae, I have taken a good long look at the Italy and it looked to me that the biggest difference of opinion between yourself and user Conte di Cavour was the inclusion of the new section which added, namely 'Main Cities', which Conte di Cavour later removed, [4].
I see you re-added a cut down version of the 'Main Cities' section again yesterday [5]
It appears you have found a compromise with the situation. In a situation like this, it is not black-and-white, you being 'right' and the other user 'wrong' (or vice versa) We all have our different opinions.
In my opinion, sometimes articles can get very long and addition of large amounts of new information, however useful does not help the article. For this reason sometimes sections of text are 'split' from the main article, forming new ones and leaving a summary in the main article.
Your new section,I think, is useful to the Italy article, but as separate detailed articles already exist on Rome, Milan, Naples etc., there is no need to go into too much detail on the main Italy article as readers can simply click on the links to find out more.
Anyway, the situation seems stable at the moment. If people object to this new section you could always offer to 'trim it down' as a compromise, instead of complete deletion.
I shall continue watching this article and help as much as I can
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 17:57, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in. I learned there were guidelines on how to do this. Some of the articles I work on have this problem (mere size creep over time). I found the official guidelines primarily at WP:SS and WP:LENGTH. I noted that an article gets a flag at 30k bytes (about 30,000 characters). The flag only shows up if you click the "Edit this page" tab at the top. —Aladdin Sane (talk) 18:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
That's OK Aladdin, you're not 'butting in'. The two links you have provided are very useful and relevant to the discussion. When article get too long and have lots and lots of photos, they can take forever loading up '(especially for people with slow internet connections). We have to bare this fact in mind, as it can put readers off an article.
The Italy article is currently 158 kilobytes long, (way over 30k) so we need to be very careful with additions. Thanks for the helpful info. :-) Marek.69 talk 18:26, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] How can one become an administrator on a Hindi Wikipedia?

Hello Marek,

I am a new editor and contributor to Hindi Wikipedia. I want to know that how can one become an administrator on a Hindi Wikipedia. Well not for getting an honour badge or get god powers (as some think) but to do real job there. There are thousands of pages that are misspelled and have duplicated all over the site with different spellings that stands for same article. Most of the pages have only one or two word article. I am saying from my experience that to do serious work, for a new user it is pretty hard there. Like our English Wikipedia the help and community pages are no help and have no links or dead links to other resources. Help pages are not there or scattered all over and there is no centralised solution for all banners and things that editors and writer need for an article.

The homepage get updates after 2-3 days.

Will you please spare a moment and tell me how it is possible to be a sysop there so I can contribute to full for my language Wikipedia, the Hindi Wikipedia?

And thank you for your cookies!

Siddharth --Wikisidd (talk) 18:33, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Siddharth, I very sorry but I am unfamiliar with the Hindi Wikipedia. I am only guessing, but I would imagine that they have a procedure similar to the RfA here on English Wikipedia. You are probably in a better position than me to find this info out.
The English Wikipedia:Administrators article links to a Hindi version on hi:विकिपीडिया:प्रबन्धक, which seems to contain a list of Hindi administrators. Maybe you could approach one of them for more information.
Meanwhile, on English Wikipedia there are the following articles, administrators' reading list, administrators' how-to guide, and guide to requests for adminship, which may be of some help to you.

[edit] Spell-checking

Thank you for your welcome.

Actually, I have done quite a bit of proof-reading of materials such as dictionaries and encyclopedia, and I know that it can be difficult and time-consuming (and incredibly boring).

The following are several suggestions I wish to make.

1) I notice that there is a page in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonly_misspelled_words ... where common misspellings are noted. I also have noted that misspelled words from this list, when put into the article "search" box, will produce hits for articles containing such misspellings.

For example, the misspelling "guidence" is illustrated here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=guidence&go=Go

The hits are given in context, so one may easily determine whether they should or should not be corrected. (Obviously, one would not want to make corrections to the page with the list of common spelling errors, for instance!)

These result pages could then be each saved, the HTML edited appropriately to include only the errors and their context (a macro can be easily devised to do this), these pages combined, the ones needing attention flagged (this process could be automated with a macro, and could be done fairly rapidly and easily), and then, using a "bot", or a macro, automatically make the edits to the relevant articles (a program or macro that would open the page, search for the mispelling, click the "edit", make the change, and save the article).

Huge numbers of misspellings could be eliminated from the encyclopedia relatively (or even very) easily.

All edits would have been first screened by the human who had flagged the errors, and a record would exist of which pages had been edited, so as to allow for a relatively easy second review of the corrections which had been made so as to assure that edits had been correctly made (I make it a point to always double check my work, which I have found helps assure its accuracy).

I would suggest that if more than one misspelling [of different terms] were detected on a single page, that that page be flagged for a more thorough human checking (this procedure could be automated, too).

2) Another possibility to reduce spelling errors in articles would be to establish a tie-up with some company (http://www.spellchecker.net/ was one which Google gave - but there are certainly dozens or more [please note, I have no affiliation with any spell-checking software company]) and put a spell-checker option in the editing pages. I'm sure there must be software companies that would allow use of their software free of charge to the Wikipedia, it being a nonprofit organization.

The benefits to Wikipedia users would be obvious, and the providing company would get credit and publicity simply by their name being in the spell-checker - a "win-win" situation as I see it. There may even be an open-source spellchecker available (sorry, I have not checked - my Internet connection is fading in and out).

3) As for my own spell checking, one technique I use is to take the entire body of the text, put a CR/LF in lieu of each space, sort the results, then remove duplicates (actually, there are a couple of other steps, but it is a little too complicated to go into here).

Then I run a spell-checker on the results, and this will usually (though it does sometimes take a great deal of time) discover large numbers of errors. It will, of course, not find all errors ("their" when should be "there") but it picks up misspellings like "seperate". (I have very limited Internet access. Were someone interested, I could describe in greater detail how to produce a file as described above).

The wikipedia articles could be dumped into a text file, processed, and the resulting list of words "zipped", sent to me, and I would be happy to spell-check it, which would give me great satisfaction knowing I had contributed (perhaps) greatly to the quality of Wikipedia. Of course, the suggestion number (2) above, regarding using a "bot" or a macro would be much much faster and easier.

Please respond to this at my user page (I'm a newbie - I think the following URL is correct):

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:62.57.50.138&redirect=no

Perhaps this message should be forwarded to some other person in the Wikipedia staff. If this is the case, could you please be so kind as to forward it?

Thank you.

I have edited the Bank of Jamaica article to show that Derick Milton Latibeaudiere has resigned as governor. I also included a reference to confirm this. Once a new governor is named, the article should be updated with the new governor's name. -- Eastmain (talk) 05:46, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Eastmain, thanks for your help with the article. Marek.69 talk 00:37, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Stop!

A person in NZ called Peter Wadams, aka P-Money forced a young woman's head onto his penis. This is a fact established by the Police and Judiciary. People in New Zealand would very much appreciate it if you could stop editing his Wiki page to erase these facts from history. Wiki is NOT about erasing facts, is it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.226.69 (talk) 06:00, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, You're right Wikipedia is not about erasing facts, but it is also not a tabloid paper. It is not our job to be sensationalist.
As the P-Money is a BLP or Biography of a living person, we must pay particular attention to verifiability.
If these claims can be verified, they can be included in the P-Money artile. At the moment, however, there are no citations whatsoever for this statement. This is why, amongst other reasons, why I removed the edits.
If you can provide a verifiable source for this information, then you may reinsert the statement. For Wikipedia's policy on this, please read: Wikipedia:Verifiability.

[edit] Cangiante

Hi Marek69, I've drafted an article on 'Cangiante'. One thing: These terms ought to be rendered in italics and I don't know how. Thanks,

Bob Consoli Dante4848 (talk) 15:10, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Bob, to use italics, simply put '' before and after the word you want in italics.
i.e. the following code:
''italics''
will give you:
italics

[edit] User name Callum Johnston

Hello Marek

I was browsing the Internet when I found a post on here about me. None of that was written by me which comes under User name Callum Johnston on here. Can you please delete the whole page.

Kind Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.135.45.127 (talk) 05:20, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Callum, Is this page specifically about you or is just the same name? Marek.69 talk 05:24, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Its about me somehow... Someone used a log in under my name, and someone has put up very personal infomation which could later on embarress me. I don't know who done this, but I would like it fully removed please.

Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.135.45.127 (talk) 13:35, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

I've already notified the other party and asked them to comment.
I expect you will have to prove your identity before any action can be taken. I will look into it and let you know.

[edit] How to delete an image file

I need to take down a file (picture) I uploaded, I tried, but think I didn't do it right. How do I delete a photo I im-properly uploaded? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nothingon (talkcontribs) 19:02, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Nothingon, to delete an image, as you are the original uploader, place the following code at the top of the page:
{{db-author}}
This places the file under the category of G7. Author requests deletion.

[edit] Blue boxes

Hi Marek,it's me,Purz12 again.I want to ask you a question:how do I erase these blue boxes on my user page?Thank you,Purz12 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Purz12 (talkcontribs) 00:45, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Purz12, the reason you have blue boxes is that you have indented the code on your user page
If you intention is to indent the text, you must use a : (colon) before the code, rather than indent the code. (I hope this makes sense to you)
i.e. the following code:
:Word gives the following result:
Word
::Word will give:
Word
:::Word will give:
Word
etc.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 01:31, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Marek,Purz12 here.I didn't really understand what you said,so can you simplify what you said?Thanks,Purz12 --Adam "Purz" Purzynski (talk) 01:36, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Adam, When you enter text in an edit box like this, you must start your line of text at the left margin. Do not put a space first.
If you wish you text to start indented (i.e. some space before it starts), then put a colon (:) at the beginning of the line.
Take a look at how this page is put together (I'm using a colon at the start of every line)
Then look at what it looks like after its been saved (this line had two colons at the start)
I hope this is clearer (three colons here) Marek.69 talk 01:44, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
