Deadpool: How much is too much?

In March we’re going to be seeing FIVE separate Deadpool comics released. Has Marvel ever heard of the term over saturating the market?
2010 might be the year of Spider-man, but March is definitely Deadpool appreciation month. But is he really that interesting a character to warrent this kind of exposure?

Yes, I'll grant you that deadpool is cool, and people do love Deadpool, and for good reason; He’s a funny character and when he's well written he's an amazing post-modern critique of the comic book genre. The only problem is that now Marvel knows just how much the fans like him they seem like they are going to take the ball and run with it… for miles and miles past the end zone, straight through the stadium wall, down the highway all the way to the end of the earth itself.

I mean, the solicits are in, and in March we’re going to be seeing FIVE separate Deadpool comics released.Five of them. That's a lot. and it's not just the merc with the mouth we'll be seeing either, we're also getting he Deadpool Corps. Deadpool, Lady Deadpool, the head of Zombie Deadpool, Kidpool, and an as-of-yet unnamed dog with a Deadpool costume (Dogpool, perhaps. Maybe Deadpup.)

Marvel is flooding the market with Deadpool in a most biblical fashion. At the rate we're going the only people who will be left reading the books will be Noah his three sons and a boat load of animals. Meaning not-good sales. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Deadpool. But I fear the fans are going to get sick of this really quick. It’s been hard enough getting people to care about the three on goings that Marvel has already been putting out, how many more books can Marvel put out before people stop reading?

Let’s look at it this way: We know the more resilient fans are going to hang in there. But the less resilient, i.e. normal fans, will likely get a little irritated with this and decide to take a little break from the Deadpool surge.
You can only stretch some characters so thin before they snap. Maybe that’s why Marvel does this with Wolverine and Deadpool: choose the characters with the healing factors because they can survive it.

They're trying to Punisherize him.

i see your point but i think this is a great way to parody blackest night with the deadpool corps(i hope they release a ring to add to my collection). i think deadpool is a great and fun character but im also an immature 15 year old that likes jokes so i keep on reading. i see why somebody could get irritated by a character especially one like deadpool who needs to be written perfectly or its no good. but once the movie comes out at least our copies of merc with the mouth #1 will go up even more(there currently 25 dollars in some places)

Or they might go down depending on whether the movie is any good...or if it gets made at all.

Great pic teabag!

the more of any character in however many books is great no matter how you slice it! don't want to buy that much? don't. but if you do then you are one happy person right about now. i like the avengers but i don;t need to buy all 700,000 avengers books on the shelf. read about 'em first and then go check out the ones you think you might like. if you don't want spoilers then "we are on two diff-er-ent wave lengths"

(oh man can someone please tell me what that's from? that quote just popped into my head and im not sure where it came from! haha i can hear the voice but i've got no face to go with it!!)

If it's detrimental to the character though it's a bad idea. I mean look what's happened to superman recently...that's what could happen here.

unfortunately this is what i was talking about months ago. not only did they take a fan favorite character who, originally was only on the level of spiderman as far as cracking jokes goes (he used to just talk a lot and crack bad jokes). but they've changed him into a truly moronic character that no other characers have any resect for because they think he's a clown.

also, it shouldn't be surprising that he's getting 5 titles and appearing in EVERY comic. they did the same exact thing to wolverine years ago, and now most people are sick of him. mark my words, this is the beginning of the end of deadpool being cool.

wolverine got popular, then he started appearing in every other character's titles. then he got multiple titles of his own, he's in xmen AND the avengers. he doesn't smoke cigars anymore. they never show him drinking beer anymore, and he's not a raging berserker anymore. he's basically wolverine LITE, now.

with deadpool its going to be the same thing. he'll get too much exposure and some idiot writers will start doing idiotic things that ruin the character. just like this. its wolverine all over again. what a shame too.

As the characters become more exposed then the more they become watered down. They are trying to appeal to the widest audience possile and to do that they have to tone down the character.

@ angelo

you're exactly right! and it sucks. how can you take a character as good as wolverine was, and turn him into this crap?

spidey is saturated and so is deadpool...i luv em but they show up in way too much comics doin the same jokes...and THEIR MOVIES ARENT OUT YET..so imagine when they do come out....MORE SATURATION!!!
marvel luvs to milk a good thing...thank god as a thor fan...he was out of it til JMS brought him back and that series was the best ever...and now with siege ending and thor running again...gillen and fraction get to write him as his movie approaches...brilliant!!!
as for wolvie...i luv the killer i grew up with...but he had to mature given the xmen situations and need for leaders...esp now with utopia...thank god i get xforce where he reverts to weapon x like behaviour
Anil Rickly - 1/6/2010, 9:10 AM
@ anil

yeah man! wolvie is written the best he's been written in years in x-force!!!
CorndogBurglar - 1/6/2010, 11:04 AM
@burglar...we need more jason aaron writing him cuz he takes the gloves off wolvie...if u read his wolvie one shots and ghost rider...he luvs the nasty brawls...and thats the dark mean wolvie i luv...hence why i luv me the new xforce
Anil Rickly - 1/6/2010, 11:15 AM
@ anil

couldn't agree more man! wolvie USED to be my favorite, but he's just not the same character anymore, and for the worse. all the things that made him so cool don't exist anymore.
CorndogBurglar - 1/6/2010, 1:37 PM
I don't know about wolverine, I've really liked him in his role as an Avenger.
