Ke$ha's 'Tik Tok' blocks 'We are the World' from the top spot on Hot 100

Never underestimate the power of skank over the power to do good: Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” keeps charity single “We Are the World 25 for Haiti” out of the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.  It would seem that the appeal of brushing one’s teeth with Jack Daniels trumps making the world a better place. It’s “Tik Tok’s ninth week at the top of the chart. According to Billboard, Ke$ha’s second single, “Blah, Blah, Blah” featuring 3OH3! is similarly storm trooping up a chart: it is No. 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100, led primarily from digital sales. “Tik Tok’s” block of »

Tina Fey may reprise Sarah Palin on 'Saturday Night Live'

Tina Fey will probably reprise her famous impression of Sarah Palin when she hosts "Saturday Night Live" in April, the comedian told The Associated Press. "It's inevitable that we'll try it, at least," Fey said in an interview Tuesday. "We'll see if it makes it to air." Officials at the NBC sketch show wouldn't comment; "SNL" generally doesn't discuss any planned sketches, given that much can change even in the hours before show time. Fey's performances as the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate were an icon of the 2008 campaign and drew huge ratings »

Steven Spielberg's 'Nine Lives' may have second life on NBC

Steven Spielberg's "Nine Lives" failed to make it to air on Sci Fi Channel several years back, but the project may find new life on NBC.   Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) ordered "Nine Lives" as a 12-hour miniseries project. The reunion of "Taken" scribe Les Bohem and super-producer Steven Spielberg was supposed to air in 2007.   The project, focusing on people using near-death experiences to reunite with deceased loved ones (and experiencing the kind of unfortunate blowback they could have avoided if only they'd just watched "Flatliners"), eventually didn't move from the announcement stage into actual production.   Now, »

Watch: Avril Lavigne's music video for 'Alice,' as in Wonderland

The tie-in video for "Alice in Wonderland" and Avril Lavigne's "Alice (Underground)" is up and, unlike falling down Lewis Carroll's rabbit hole, it goes nowhere. As previously reported, it's been about three years since we've heard new material from the punk-pop princess, and this re-emergence gives us mixed reactions. We like hearing her take chances with her voice, the flips and yodels and long notes. But its that latter that chaffes our skin; it's not pretty, like the piano lines and the dramatic, aching melodrama of the song indicates. Also, rhyming "now" a million different ways sounds just plain lazy. In »

TV Ratings: Olympics get revenge on 'American Idol' on Wednesday

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, February 17, 2010.   After getting thumped by "American Idol" on Tuesday, the NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics turned around and crushed "American Idol" on Wednesday, as viewers favored Shaun White high-flying athletics to the final Top 24 reveal.   Among adults 18-49, NBC dominated the night with an 8.9 rating, far ahead of the 4.5 rating for Fox in the key demographic. CBS was a distant third with a 1.8 rating, with ABC's 1.5 rating and the 0.4 rating for The CW following.   Overall, NBC averaged an estimated 29.26 million viewers to go »

Is James Cameron the victim of dirty Oscar campaigning or just his own ego?

It's hard to imagine a PBS show affecting the Oscars, but this year it may just tip the balance of the Best Picture race.  Moreover, the incident on "Charlie Rose" Thursday night may just be the first cast of dirty Academy Award campaigning since the nominees were announced earlier this month. In one of his few TV interviews since "Avatar" landed nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, James Cameron appeared on "Charlie Rose" to discuss the mega-success of what has become the highest grossing picture of all time. During the sit down Rose talked about how Academy voters might »

Breck Eisner talks about his goals for 'Flash Gordon'

We are entering a new age of cinematic pulp. I know for some audiences, the word "pulp" makes them immediately think of Quentin Tarantino, thanks to the way he staked his claim on it in the '90s, but for some of us, pulp is a particular flavor of fantastic fiction that has only been flirted with in recent years.  "Avatar" may have felt brand new to many audiences, but I thought it was a big fat slice of pulp science-fiction, unapologetic about it.  And with "John Carter Of Mars" in production now and Sam Raimi talking about "The Shadow" and Shane Black writing »

Sam Worthington gets epic on the 'Clash of the Titans' set

It's mid-August, 2009. [Pretend for a second, with us.] "Avatar" hasn't made $2.4 billion dollars worldwide. It hasn't picked up nine Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Best Picture win. In fact, the first trailer for "Avatar" has just hit the Internet (before the special IMAX day) and people have begun making "Delgo" jokes. Amidst that backdrop, it takes confidence for Sam Worthington to stride in and meet a makeshift tent full of journalists to talk about "Clash of the Titans." Fortunately, Sam Worthington is a confident man and, in this instance, he's a confident man in a dress. I guess »

Set Visit: Unleashing the Kraken with 'Clash of the Titans'

The spring release date may be similar and to video game obsessed American school children ancient Sparta and mythological Greece may be indistinguishable, but it would be a mistake to confuse Louis Leterrier's updating of "Clash of the Titans" with "300." It's mid-August and a group of journalists have just taken the short drive from the heart of London to Longcross Studios, but more practically we've taken a drive back in time. I'm not going to be corny and say that visiting the former tank factory in Surrey county was like hopping in Delorean and journeying to an age where the »

Last night, "American Idol" revealed the first seven members of the Top 24. That leaves 17 open slots to be filled over the course of only one hour on Wednesday (Feb. 17) night. How will "American Idol" possibly be able to fit in all of the excitement? And who will join Didi Benami, Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly, Katelyn Epperly, Lee Dewyze, Todrick Hall and Casey James in the Top 24? This is the final judgment. And this is "American Idol." After the break... 9:01 p.m. There may not be any time tonight for four-minute programming blocks and seven minute commercial interruptions of the »

Is George Lucas directing major reshoots on 'Red Tails'?

Is this a case of publicists playing cover-your-ass, or is it a case of information being taken out of context?  Let's break it down and see if we can figure it out.  According to a report on First Showing, the long-in-gestation Lucasfilm project "Red Tails" has taken another step back on its road to release, and at this point, if there was a new story tomorrow that somehow all the dailies and negatives for the film were somehow burned, I would not be surprised. For those who are not familiar with the film's history, "Red Tails" is a story about the Tuskegee Airmen »

HitFix Interview: 'The Life and Times of Tim' creator Steve Dildarian

It's tempting to think of Steve Dildarian as being a live action version of Tim, the hard-luck hero of the HBO comedy "The Life and Times of Tim." Dildarian certainly sounds a lot like his protagonist, who has a tendency to get into awkward situations with hookers, priests and homeless people alike. But while Tim is stuck in an unrewarding, frequently jeopardized job, Dildarian transitioned from a wildly successful career in advertising -- his commercials for clients ranging from Budweiser to Staples to Little Caesars earned 35 Clios -- to the successful short "Angry Unpaid Hooker," which became the basis for »

Fiona Apple to re-emerge with sort-of all-new benefit song with Jon Brion

Fiona Apple has done little more than cover songs in the way of recording since releasing her 2005 album "Extraordinary Machine" -- but perhaps a new song written with school-aged kids in Los Angeles may be her first step toward producing more material. She and frequent collaborator Jon Brion have signed on contributing to "Chickens In Love," a benefit compilation for children's literacy and creative writing non-profit 826La. While the pair will compose original music, kids will produce lyrics for the track via workshop. The release date is Tbd, and the compilation will also feature contributions from M. Ward and Zooey »

Sundance 2010: 'Blue Valentine'

Marriage and love are not the same thing, and one is not enough to guarantee the other, no matter what we want or think we deserve. I can honestly say that in my nearly 40 years alive, the single most complex, frustrating, terrifying, rewarding, and influential relationship I've had with anyone is the one I have with my wife.  Every marriage is different, offering different reasons for the union between the two people, and every marriage comes with its own built-in pitfalls and stumbling blocks.  No one can truly understand or judge a marriage from the outside, and even the people in the »

'Basterd' Waltz joins Robert Pattinson in 'Circus'

17 February 2010 1:59 PM, PST

Christoph Waltz has all the fun: he’s going from playing a murderous conniving Nazi officer in “Inglourious Basterds” to a villainous paranoid schizophrenic animal wrangler in forthcoming Depression Era drama “Circus.” According to Deadline, the Austrian actor will star alongside Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in the Francis Lawrence-directed flick, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel "Water for Elephants." It will be released via Fox 2000, produced by Gil Netter, Erwin Stoff and Andrew Tennenbaum. Waltz plays Witherspoon’s husband, two workers in a cheap traveling circus with the actress as its star. ‘Twilight’ star Pattinson joins in the travels and falls »
