Revitalization and Design
The Revitalization and Design Division advances quality design and sustainability in the District as strategies for continued economic competitiveness and enhanced livability. We are responsible for planning areas in central Washington and for public space, sustainability, and design programs for the District of Columbia. We engage residents, sister agencies, and the development community to realize economically vibrant commercial areas, strong neighborhoods, and well-connected public space.
The Revitalization and Design Division focuses on the following areas:
Center City Planning
Center City Planning develops plans and projects for districts and destinations within center city, partners with the Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), sister agencies and the Federal government, and implements the projects laid out in the Center City Action Agenda 2008.
Public Space Planning
Public Space Planning manages the public space program and reviews major public realm projects such as streetscapes, parks and open space designs. Plans, manuals, guidelines, and other tools are available to advance the program and address safety, environment, community image and walkability.
Sustainability Planning
Sustainability Planning incorporates environmentally sound action into the ongoing development of the District, partnering with the District Department on the Environment and multiple regional agencies on energy and resource conservation, new mobility, green economic development, pollution prevention, and climate change mitigation.
Urban Design and Design Review
Urban Design and Design Review includes the development of design strategies and guidelines for specific areas and projects, rendering and visual depiction, and the review of buildings, landscape installations, streetscape, public art, signage and commemorative works, including assistance with Planned Unit Developments.
