Director: Jon Favreau Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: With the world now aware of his dual life as the armored superhero Iron Man, billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, must forge new alliances -- and confront powerful enemies.
THE BUZZ: Ten years ago, Gwyneth Paltrow was a recent Oscar winner and comic-book movies weren't even on Hollywood's radar. Even five years ago, who would've expected one of the most anticipated movies of the year would be a second-tier comics property starring two hard-living actors experiencing an industry rebirth. The only aspect of this sequel which gives me (and plenty of others) pause is the presence of multiple villains; hopefully Marvel has learned the error of their Spider-Man 3 ways in this respect. Director: Gary Winick Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Gael García Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: A young woman (Seyfried) on vacation in Italy finds an unanswered "letter to Juliet" -- one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover's Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by Juliet's real-world "secretaries" -- and she goes on a quest to find the lovers referenced in the letter. THE BUZZ: Director Gary Winick's last offering, Bride Wars was shrill, alienating, and out of touch with modern times. To atone: he offers up this romantic fantasy with an inspired principal cast; exactly how Amanda Seyfried, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Vanessa Redgrave were all cast in the same project sounds like a romantic drama unto itself. And this sounds so much more in tune with audience desires than even Sex and the City 2. Just no singing this time, and no Pierce Brosnan. Director: Thomas Balmes Stars: (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A look at one year in the life of four babies living on different continents: Ponijao (Opuwo, Namibia), Bayar (Bayanchandmani, Mongolia), Mari (Tokyo, Japan), and Hattie (San Francisco, California). THE BUZZ: Featuring 30 seconds of two infants crying is a risky introduction to this documentary. Thank goodness a Sufjan Stevens song follows to soothe us through the trailer. I think this documentary looks supercute, however, I cannot get a Sandra Bernhard quote out of my head; when asked to go on talk shows and appear in magazine spreads during her pregnancy, she stated (I'm paraphrasing here): "It's a baby, not a marketing gimmick." Director: Ridley Scott Stars: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: The story of an expert archer (Crowe) who travels to the town of Nottingham toward the end of the 12th century, where the acts of a despotic sheriff (Macfadyen) and the presence of a beautiful widow (Blanchett) inspire him to assembles a gang of mercenaries bent on raiding the upper class as a way to correct the sheriff's injustices.
THE BUZZ: Breathless from watching the first trailer, it's hard to believe this epic had such a tough time getting into production (director Scott flip-flopped on a script that took a while to earn star Crowe's interest). We're thrilled by the first look at the hopeful blockbuster, and long ago we bid welcomed farewell to the story's proposed Robin-Marian-Sheriff love triangle, as well as Ms. Sienna Miller, who was first in line to play Maid Marian. Director: John Luessenhop Stars: Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: A hard-boiled detective (Dillon) gets in between a group of bank robbers and their plan to make away with a $20 million bounty.
THE BUZZ: Matt Dillon is back on the right side of the law after Armored, but the real question here is: How do you promote a movie featuring one currently incarcerated musician/actor (T.I.) and Chris Brown, the R&B; star who, at the time of this writing, is about to face two felony charges stemming from his fight with his still-girlfriend, Rihanna? Suddenly, heist movies don't seem fun anymore. Message Boards: Chris Brown and TI??? Director: Mike Mitchell Stars: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: A bored and domesticated Shrek (Myers) pacts with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away -- where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona (Diaz) have never met -- he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love. THE BUZZ: Shrek is set for a fourth and final adventure, but the movie's Puss in Boots spin-off, which was once set to go direct-to-DVD but is instead attracting A-listers both established (Selma Hayek) and still dewey behind the ears (Zach Galifianakis). More than anything, it's taking the story back to the days before the yawningly received third chapter. We do wish the rumors about Paul McCartney playing Rumpelstiltskin proved true, alas ... Director: Mike Newell Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Set in medieval Persia, a rogue prince (Gyllenhaal) joins a mysterious princess (Arterton) in an effort to prevent a dark force from obtaining an ancient dagger that allows its handler to rule the world.
THE BUZZ: Swords, sandals, wigs, and questionable accents are in in in this year, with Prince of Persia looking to please both video game junkies and anyone who openly or secretly desires Jake Gyl. And with director Mike Newell calling the shots, we might be able to take this one semi-seriously. Director: Michael Patrick King Stars: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Plot unknown
THE BUZZ: Thanks to all forms of the modern press, it feels as though almost every intimate detail of this edition of SaTC is known, assumed, hotly rumored, what have you. Good ideas (trimming the run time to make the sequel feel more episodic) are mixed with potentially bad ones (economic woes? new meat in the form of myriad suitors as well as Miley Cyrus?). Back when Carrie Bradshaw used to write, she might have said something like: In the multiplex of life, can a sequel live up to the original, or are we just trying to recapture what's best left to DVD? Message Boards: Which of the boyfriends did you least like.. | Was that Carrie in the trailer...*Warning: Possible Spoiler*? Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews |
