The Los Angeles Portal

Los Angeles is the largest city in the State of California and the second largest city in the USA after New York. Los Angeles (simply L.A.) has an estimated population of 3.8 million and spans over 498.3 square miles (1,290.6 km2) in Southern California. Additionally, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area is home to nearly 12.9 million residents and is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated as well as one of the most diverse counties in the United States.

The City of Los Angeles was founded in September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula (The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of the river of Porziuncola). It became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its independence from Spain. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood.

A huge metropolis, Los Angeles is one of the world's centers of business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology, and education. It is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Though L.A. is often referred to as the entertainment capital of the world, the credit can go to the county's unincorporated city of Hollywood, although major companies have moved to cities such as Burbank. Hollywood leads the world in the creation of motion pictures, television production, and recorded music and hosts the Oscars as well as other academy awards. The importance of the entertainment business to the city has led many celebrities to call Los Angeles and its surrounding suburbs home.

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, situated west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonymy of American cinema. The nickname Tinseltown refers to the glittering, superficial nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as the Westside neighborhood, but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production and lighting companies, remain in Hollywood, as does the backlot of Paramount Pictures. The border can be loosely described as the area east of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, south of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Cahuenga Boulevard, and Barham Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale, north of Melrose Avenue and west of the Golden State Freeway and Hyperion Avenue.

This includes all of Griffith Park and Los Feliz—two areas that were hitherto generally considered separate from Hollywood by most Angelenos. Many historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues and concert stages to premiere major theatrical releases and host the Academy Awards. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a large outdoor sports stadium in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California at Exposition Park that is home to the University of Southern California Trojans football team.

The Capitol Records Building is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Hollywood, California. The 13-story earthquake resistant tower, designed by Welton Becket, was the world's first circular office building. The building is located in the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District.

The Beach Cities are located along the California Coast south and west of Los Angeles in the South Bay area of Southern California. The beach communities include Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. All three cities are renowned for their beaches and have municipal piers as well as shopping and eateries along the coastline. The strand runs along the beaches and is popular for cycling, running and rollerblading.
