Stephen Daldry Among Potential 'Breaking Dawn' Directors

25 March 2010 4:31 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

The race for the director's position on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" continues, as yet another unexpected name has been connected to Summit Entertainment's vampire franchise: Stephen Daldry.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Daldry is the latest filmmaker to join the mix of possible directors for "Breaking Dawn," the fourth and final installment (or installments, if the book is split into two movies) in the film series based on Stephenie Meyer's popular supernatural romance novels. Daldry's prior film credits include "The Hours," "Billy Elliot" and "The Reader," for which actress Kate Winslet won an Academy Award. Although Daldry has not won an Oscar himself, he has been nominated for all three of the aforementioned movies.

Robin Hood to open Cannes film festival

37 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Ridley Scott's revisionist take on the Nottingham icon has been announced as the opening night film at 63rd Cannes film festival

It's had a bumpy road to the big screen, but Robin Hood, Ridley Scott's all-action blockbuster about the tights-wearing wealth distributor, finally rides through the glen in a blaze of glory to kick off this year's Cannes film festival.

Russell Crowe takes the lead (a role originally earmarked for Christian Bale), while Cate Blanchett (taking over from Sienna Miller) is Maid Marian and Matthew Macfadyen the dasterdly Sherriff of Nottingham. Max von Sydow and William Hurt also feature. The film looks to have its tongue firmly out of its cheek: the screenplay is by Brian Helgeland (La Confidential, Mystic River) and trailers suggest it's a tough, macho take; a far cry from either Errol Flynn's larky swashbuckler, or the soft-focus dreamboat Kevin Costner, who faced off »

What's wrong with a little escapism in art? | Jonathan Jones

43 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Modern reality is all very well but why not let art lead you to other places and times – in the way an escapist novel or film might

Critics are always praising works of art for being urgent, challenging, disturbing, provocative and so forth. But is that what people actually want from the arts? Is it what I, personally, require?

Apparently not, or not always, because I've recently watched the following films: La Reine Margot, The New World, Jeanne la Pucelle and Lancelot du Lac. What they have in common is that they are escapist historical romances, far removed from 21st-century life. Like most people, I don't want art to only rub my nose in modern reality. I want it to take me to other places and times, from the lurid Renaissance world of Queen Margot to the fabulous futures of science fiction.

This is also how people read novels: Hilary »

Anyclip Launches Without Clips, But With Lots of Quotes for Movie Lovers

48 minutes ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Last September I wrote about the very ambitious startup Anyclip, which at the time aimed to let you find a clip of “any moment from any film ever made.” The site was in beta for some time, and it finally launched a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the company wasn't able to convince Hollywood studios to let them license any actual films -- despite how useful such a service would be for both film lovers and studios -- so Anyclip was forced to launch its service without any film clips. But even without movie licensing (which the company is still actively pursuing), Anyclip is still aiming to help you find other aspects of specific movie moments -- in particular, movie quotes. You can search for quotes (along with other descriptors like actions, objects, movies, and actors) from the site's main search engine. There are also a few specialized searches, including one »

Carey Mulligan 'set to play' Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady film

Emma Thompson appears to confirm suspicions that Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan will star in a remake of My Fair Lady

Carey Mulligan, who lost out to Sandra Bullock on the best actress Oscar earlier this year for her star-making turn in An Education, appears to be the new lead in a long-gestating remake of My Fair Lady.

Speaking to BBC5 Live at the premeire of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Emma Thompson, who is writing the script for the project, said her understanding was that Mulligan had signed on.

"I think Carey is set to play it," she said. "But we still don't know about Higgins. I love Hugh [Grant], so I'd love him to do it – he might want to, he might not want to – so we don't know yet. But hopefully we'll make it later this year."

Joe Wright had at one time been rumoured to be taking the director's chair, »

Why are we still so deferential to French film-makers?

59 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

French cinema enjoys the confidence of a fine pedigree, but in 2010 are British directors really less talented than their Gallic counterparts?

For the British film lover, a sad fact of life is the suspicion that you've fallen for someone else's art form. For all our occasional triumphs we are so often, at the business end of things, a mere colony of Hollywood – while artistically, we abide in the uneasy knowledge that close to us there is a place where a conveyor belt of fine movies seems to just keep rolling on, effortlessly bringing wonderful, truly cinematic films to its own people and the world beyond. Yup, I'm on about France.

Such was the gist, from an American perspective, of a recent piece by Salon's Andrew O'Hehir. Writing under the teasing headline "Are French films just … better?" O'Hehir looked at the way that for English-speaking cinephiles, French film is still the »

New Shrek Forever After Posters Online

1 hour ago | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

With Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss In Boots et al heading back to our screens in Shrek Forever After, DreamWorks have released two new promo posters to pave the way for our very very visit to Far Far Away.Shrek Forever After has everyone's favourite ogre languishing in domestic bliss only to find his life snatched from him by the wily Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), a kind of miniature Faust with Jane Goldman hair, who persuades him to exchange a day of his life for the chance to revisit his youth.Director Mike 'Sky High' Mitchell is promising few pop culture references, fewer characters but way more plot. Which sounds good to our pointy ears. "For me, Shrek's the Tony Soprano for kids," Mitchell tells us. "But he's not the same Shrek as he was - he's got kids now. So it's Shrek's mid-life crisis - he's lost his roar. »

Christopher Nolan Chats Cameras and 3D

2 hours ago | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Details of Christopher Nolan’s Inception are pretty scarce. We know it is set in the “architecture of the mind” and there’s some sort of espionage thriller going on…or is there? Leonardo DiCaprio has already starred in one mind-warping movie this year with Shutter Island, so he’s clearly up for some more cinematic trickery. Talking with Collider, Nolan has been blabbing about the technology used to film Inception and also aired his thoughts on 3D:

“3D I think is an interesting development in movies or the resurgence of 3D. It’s something we’re looking at and watching. There are certain limitations of shooting in 3D. You have to shoot on video, which I’m not a fan of. I like shooting on film. And so then you’re looking at post-conversion processes which are moving forward in very exciting ways.”

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice International Movie Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new international movie trailer for Jon Turteltaub's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The trailer is basically a variation on the trailer released late last year in the states, but includes a bit more dialogue, action and a better look at Alfred Molina as the film's villain Maxim. Shockingly, I've been hearing nothing but good things about this film from my insiders who are in the know. So if you're done watching that awesome Scott Pilgrim trailer again (really, we know you're excited but it's quickly becoming a problem), head on after the jump. As always, please leave your thoughts in the comments below. Showrunners Check Out of 'Private Practice'

2 hours ago | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Private Practice, the medical drama spin-off from Grey's Anatomy, has lost its showrunners according to the Hollywood Reporter. The series will continue the second half of its third season with creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes at the helm but without executive producers Robert Rovner and Jon Cowan.

According to the report, Rovner and Cowan stepped down from their respective positions on the ABC series, where they have been showrunners since Season 2. No reason was given for their decision. It is not expected to affect production of the show because episode stories for the rest of the season have reportedly already been developed.

Given it's success as a companion to Greys Anatomy in ABC's Thursday night line-up (my wife watches both, so it's partly her fault) Private Practice is expected to be renewed for a fourth season. »

Stephen Mangan on life after Green Wing

The star of the cult comedy on working with True Blood star, Alexander Skarsgård, his quiet personal life and why he doesn't regret those Barclaycard ads

Stephen Mangan lives in Primrose Hill, a plush north-London neighbourhood where most of the shops sell sushi, cupcakes or premium bathroom fittings. He calls his favourite deli, Melrose and Morgan, Melrose and Mortgage ("the finest food known to humanity but eyewateringly expensive"). Half the locals are paparazzi fodder – it's not unusual for a fleet of mopeds to stream past the stucco terraces in pursuit of Kate Moss. But generally, he says, his patch of 18 years is pretty quiet, despite tabloid legend. "The cocaine-fuelled, dwarf-chucking parties, I really don't know where it happens. I've never been invited."

It's not exactly a byword for frugal, hairshirt living, though. Outside one of the smarter pubs, next to an unlit patio heater, Mangan is considering his carbon footprint »

Stephen Daldry In Running To Direct Breaking Dawn

2 hours ago | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Last week it was Bill Condon, Sofia Coppola and Gus Van Sant. This week it’s Billy Elliot director, Stephen Daldry. For what? For Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. It’s fast becoming the hottest directing gig in town and you’re a total nobody if you’ve not been attached! According to the L.A. Times, Summit Entertainment have thrown his name into the hat, but will it be pulled out and announced, “Ladies, Gentlemen and Twi-hards, we have a winner!”

R. Pattz is clearly in favour of working with Gus Van Sant. He told MTV recently:

“He shoots everything in Portland. He’s good at making it look beautiful. It’s all about teenage love and obsessions. I think Gus Van Sant would be great.”

Both directors are known for their sensitive approach to filmmaking, but if they’re after a proper auteur filmmaker, then there’s nobody better than Gus Van Sant. »

On Blu-ray 'Up in the Air' Is as Sharp as It Gets

2 hours ago | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Up in the Air is one of the best looking movies on Blu-ray that I have seen this year. That may sound surprising given that it is not a special effects bonanza. From the opening sequence of aerial images to the final credits, though, this film is literally a picture of clarity in high-definition. It is not just the imagery that is sharp, too. Aside from a few brief lulls, the script is witty, original and touching, the dialogue is natural and convincing and the acting is top drawer. All that is missing from this release is some in-depth bonus features. A film of this quality cries out for more background material. The lack of it is the only thing that might stop Up in the Air from being one of my Top 10 Blu-ray releases of 2010.

Want to know more? Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) is a calm, composed, charming professional  terminator. »

Carey Mulligan For Eliza Doolittle?

3 hours ago | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Late last year, we reported that Keira Knightley was eyeing the role of Eliza Doolittle in John Madden’s remake of My Fair Lady. Well, the remake’s writer – Emma Thompson – has told the BBC that An Education actress Carey Mulligan is a shoe-in for the part. There’s been no official confirmation, but Emma Thompson is a super cool actress and all-round good egg, so I doubt she’s made it up. Will Knightley be worried that she’s got a new rival?

There’s been no word yet that this film has even got funding, but if Thompson is blabbing about Mulligan being cast, then surely John Madden has got the ball rolling? Now who would be great as Professor Higgins? I’d go with my local film star (who I saw last week at Soho Screening Rooms, by the way) Colin Firth. He’d be great and he can handle a tune… »

Here's The Hollywood Reporter Offer To Me

As you know, I responded early yesterday to some inaccurate showbiz website's rumor-mongering. I revealed that, in early December, the new owners of The Hollywood Reporter approached me about becoming editor-in-chief. And that, in January, they made me a very lucrative financial offer. But last night, Richard Beckman, formerly Condé Nast's Fairchild Fashion Group CEO who's now CEO of THR's parent company e5 Global Media, told the trade "there is no truth to the report" that I'd been offered THR's editor-in-chief. Huh? I've gone over my notes, and let me reaffirm that the offer was real and detailed and made to me by one of [...] »

New U.K. Poster For Bad Lieutenant

Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch might have been put back, but Kick-Ass and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans are both heading our way very, very soon. A new U.K. poster has been released to remind everybody of the wacky cop remake directed by Werner Herzog and it looks like it’s dropped the sub-title too. And it’s not strictly a remake at all. They’ve just nabbed the title and given it a Herzogian and Cage spin…so basically, it’ll be mental.

Cage has been winning rave reviews with many saying it’s his best performance in years. He’s got a slew of films out this year – not including the animation stuff he’s been lending his distinct drawl to. Is this officially The Year of The Cage?

The poster depicts Cage, co-star Eva Mendes and an iguana…cool.
