Cannes, the Morning After

1 hour ago | IMDb Blog - All the Latest | See recent IMDb Blog - All the Latest news »

Now that I’m back in the States it’s interesting to discover what’s still being discussed by the journalists back in Cannes is something that happened over a week ago, the premiere of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful . It, along with Mike Leigh’s film, Another Year, remain the films mentioned the most when talks of the Palme d’Or arise but Biutiful also has very vocal detractors. The coveted Palme is given on Sunday and I have a sneaking suspicion that The Housemaid, a Korean film from director Im Sang-Soo, will also be pulling in some of the awards as well.

Those three films, with the addition of Oliver Assayas’s Carlos, were the favorites among the critics I talked to. Other nods of approval went the simple but sweet Stephen Frears film, Tamara Drewe, Xavier Beauvois’s Les Hommes et des Dieux, and Doug Liman’s Fair Game. »

Say it isn't so: Weinsteins' deal to reclaim Miramax falls apart

3 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

So much for the happy ending.  After weeks of speculation that it was a done deal, negotiations have broken down between the Weinsteins and the Walt Disney Company for the brothers to reclaim the Miramax brand and film catalog. According to the Los Angeles Times, the deal broke up over two issues.  First, how the company would be integrate into the Weinsteins' current outfit, The Weinstein Company, and second, the inability of partner Ron Burkle to raise the $625 million the partners had bid.  The paper reports Burkle was putting in $300 million of his own, but looking or outside financiers »

Screen Gems is clear to go forward with the title Friends with Benefits for its new comedy starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, the studio confirms. (The studio did drop their complaint Thursday.)  Now Friends With Benefits will begin production in July in New York and Los Angeles.

But to complicate matters, NBC is planning a Friends with Benefits sitcom as a mid-season replacement. It comes from 500 Days of Summer »

Weekend Briefing: 'Shrek' Shoots for Happily Ever After

8 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

This weekend, the fourth and presumably final Shrek lumbers into 4,359 theaters, surpassing Shrek 2 as the broadest release ever for an animated movie. Included in that sum are 2,373 3D sites, topping Alice in Wonderland (2010) as the biggest release yet for the format. Also opening is Saturday Night Live-based action comedy MacGruber at 2,551 theaters. Shrek is one of the few franchises to gross over $1 billion, and it did it with only three movies. Shrek Forever After follows the series' pattern of opening on the weekend before Memorial Day and arriving three years after the last movie. Whether it continues the series' tradition of breaking the animation opening weekend record with each release is another matter, but it will have an uphill battle following audiences' mixed reaction to Shrek the Third and Box Office Mojo reader polling that indicates far less interest than Shrek the Third had. Kate Gosselin: Who Wants to Watch Her Get High?

1 hour ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online - Movies and Television news »

Don't be surprised if Kate Gosselin is really high when she performs next week on Dancing With the Stars—high in the air, that is. Just a couple of days after her pro partner Tony Dovolani told us Gosselin would be "flying" during her grand return to the dance floor, ABC announced earlier today that the reality-television mom of eight will perform a "high wire act." Hopefully, she'll be more relaxed than she was when she competed on the show because... Maksim Chmerkovskiy thinks Ms. Gosselin could have possibly had a longer run on Dwts if she had just loosened up a bit. "I think she was so preoccupied with thinking and worrying about what everybody will »

American Idol: Casey James' Shirtless Days Are Over!

1 hour ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online - Movies and Television news »

Memo to Casey James: Don't sell yourself so short. We chatted up the latest American Idol eliminee Friday, and when asked about his oft-referenced PG-striptease, he told reporters: "Who's to say that I would be here if I hadn't done that?" We're choosing to believe it was your talent, not that tanned and toned chest of yours, but hey, maybe he's just modest... We kid! Casey is well-aware of his musical prowess, saying: "If you feel like you can back yourself up and not be the guy who took his shirt off, because hopefully that's not who I am now, then do what you need to do to get the ball rolling. There's a possibility had I not done that, I wouldn't have made it past the »

Weinsteins Lose Miramax Deal, Kerrey Gets MPAA, IFC and Sony on Cannes Buying Spree

I'm sitting in a airport restaurant at JFK charging my computer, my BlackBerry and my iPod, steeling myself for another long flight. I flew into NY a month ago, so I have to fly back to La from here, too. Sigh. Two Brit women sitting next to me on Air France were taking advantage of the free-flowing wine during the entire flight. Jolly indeed. And I slept quite a bit. It's been a lot of five-hour nights at Cannes. No complaints. Meanwhile, news is breaking that the Weinstein deal, as I had been hearing, has indeed fallen through. At the Blue Valentine rooftop party at Cannes, where Ryan Gosling was in good spirits, having been offered pyjamas on the Lufthansa flight on the way over, Harvey »

Drake has yet to release his full-length record, yet here he is, with one of the most anticipated releases this year. "Thank Me Later" finally has what sounds like a firm release date, June 15, which has been moved several times now, but even more solid is the lineup of guests he has on the set. Jay-z, Alicia Keys, The-Dream and Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Young Jeezy, T.I. and Swizz Beatz are the who's who of this album, though Drake has insisted that he doesn't want the star power to override his star songs. Whatever. Furthermore, the tracklist is below, and includes »

The Official CW Fall 2010 Schedule

4 hours ago | IMDb Television Blog | See recent IMDb Television Blog news »

As promised, here is the official schedule The CW released yesterday. We made a few predictions as to how it would shake out on Wednesday, and it looks like a couple of our wild guesses actually came to pass.

The development I am the most curious to discuss with fellow viewers is The CW’s decision to  move “Supernatural” to Fridays.  “Smallville” seemed to do Ok there during the ‘09-10 season, so it’s not the worst thing to happen…still, this Winchester fan is a tad concerned. (Not to mention a bit miffed to have to sacrifice her Friday nights due to her allegiance to Sam and Dean…darn.)

All times are Et/Pt. New series are in bold. Descriptions taken from the… »

Yup, This Is the Woman Linked to Matt Lauer

4 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online - Movies and Television news »

Late last week, a singer by the name of Alexis Houston denied a gossip website report that she had an affair with Matt Lauer. But the denial apparently wasn't good enough, because... Alexis held a press conference earlier today to deny it again with everywhere-you-turn-there-she-is-attorney Gloria Allred by her side. (They faced the media in front of a restaurant, where Gloria was taking Alexis to lunch for her birthday. How sweet.) Not only did Alexis, who reportedly has claimed to be Whitney Houston's half-sister (something the Grammy winner strongly denies), complain that her privacy has been oh-so invaded by the media because of the Lauer link, but she even offered an explanation of how it »

How Spider-Man lost the lead role in 'Rise Of The Apes' to the Green Goblin

5 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It's an interesting moment for Tobey Maguire. When he was playing Spider-Man on a regular basis, Maguire was a movie star by default.  If you star in a film that makes $800 million or so worldwide, you're potentially bankable.  If you star in two, you're a potential star.  You star in three?  That's a rare club.  Maguire's done it.  Three giant giant movies. But aside from those three films, has he ever really opened a movie?  I like a lot of his work.  I just wrote about "Ride With The Devil" the other day, and a big part of that film's sucess »
