Frequently Asked Questions--Prospective Students

Click on the question below for other questions not covered in that list:

  1. What is Engineering?
  2. Can I make arrangements to speak with a professor or students in my selected department?

1.What is Engineering?
Engineering is a challenging and rewarding profession for an individual who loves science and mathematics. You cannot describe the discipline in just one paragraph because you can do so much with a degree in Engineering. As examples, you might be involved in designing a spacecraft or a hydrostructure, in finding ways to improve transportation structures, or in working with computers and communications. Where science is the discovery of knowledge, engineering is the application of that knowledge. For more information on the different majors available to you, you should look at the departments by selecting one on the college web page.

2. I heard that I had to take general engineering courses first. Is that correct and why?
The College of Engineering at Virginia Tech requires entering freshmen to take introductory course work. It gives you an opportunity to prepare for your chosen degree and gives you a solid base for your college career in the field of Engineering. See the Engineering Education's web page for more information on the Freshman Curriculum.

3. What's first?! How do I get to the Virginia Tech campus? What should I do as soon as I get there?
The campus of Virginia Tech is beautiful and very functional. For directions and maps, please take a look at Campus Guide. This is a great help for the prospective student and parents. Due to parking restrictions on the Virginia Tech campus, we do suggest that you first stop by the Visitor's Center located on Southgate Drive for a parking permit.

4. Can you suggest hotel accommodations and restaurants while we are in Blacksburg?
The Blacksburg Electronic Villiage offers a lodging info page. It is a great resource for newcomers to our area.

5. I understand that there is an information session for the College of Engineering. Tell me a little about it. Do I need reservations to attend? Is it the same as the Admissions Information Session?
The College of Engineering holds an information session in the Office of Academic Affairs each weekday (Monday through Friday) at 11:15 a.m. This information session gives the student and parents a brief overview of what the College of Engineering has to offer. There is a presentation followed by a question and answer session. We do ask that you register for an Information Session ahead of time.

6. Where are you located?
The Office of Academic Affairs is located at 212 Hancock Hall. Hancock Hall is behind Burruss and Norris Halls. [Campus Maps (building#133c)] Our office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

7. Is there a tour of the College of Engineering?
Due to the size of the College of Engineering, there is not currently a walking tour available. But there is the walking tour of the campus provided by the Admissions Office in 201 Burruss Hall.

8. Can a prospective student sit in on a class?
Students can arrange to sit in on a class. This is a fun and valuable option for the student. If you would like to visit an engineering course, please contact Engineering Education at 540-231-6555.

9. I have AP credits, International Baccalaureate credits and/or credits from another college or university? I would like to see if they will transfer here before I submit my application. Can I do that?
Due to the volume of transcripts we receive from incoming freshman and current students, we are unable to review your transcript(s) until after you are offered admission to the University. You may view the on-line Transfer Equivalency Database to determine how your classes from another college transfer to Tech.
A chart of credit hours awarded for advanced placement is available through the university admissions office.

10. Can I make arrangements to speak with a professor or students in my selected department?
Each department in the College of Engineering will be happy to schedule an appointment with you and your parents. Please call their direct numbers and they will arrange a meeting with you. Click here to see the list.
