The Office of Finance and Operations

Overview
The College's resources can be segregated into three major components: fiscal, human resource, and facilities:

  • Fiscal:
Chief among the responsibilities of the office of Finance and Operations is allocation of the state-funded budgets to the 12 decentralized engineering departments and administration of the portion of the budget maintained at the college level. The office is also responsible for many financial elements of the college's sizable research program and coordinating the details of its endowment resources with the Virginia Tech Foundation.
  • Human Resources:
The majority of the financial expenditures are made to compensate the college's faculty and staff. Since many of these decisions are inter-related, the administration of human resource matters is also the responsibility of the office of Finance and Operations. These responsibilities include serving as the resource person for the Promotion & Tenure Committee, reviewing and approving all personnel actions, recommending staffing levels and mediating personnel conflicts.
  • Facilities:
College offices and laboratories occupy over 500,000 square feet of space on or near the Virginia Tech campus. A large amount of time is spent working with departments to renovate these facilities for the needs of current research projects and making sure that the spaces are used to their optimal potential.
  • General Administrative:
Since most administrative matters occur in conjunction with the central University departments, the office of Finance and Operations is the primary liaison with these offices. Working with these organizations, the office of Finance and Operations attempts to minimize the bureaucracy that department faculty and staffs must navigate. Making sure that the departments are aware of all the most up-to-date information about relevant issues and regulations is also an important task.

In summary, the office of Finance and Operations is responsible for making sure that resources are utilized to maximize their benefit for the College of Engineering students and other college stakeholders.
