Notes
Ponsonby are now known as Mt Albert-Ponsonby after merging with Mt Albert in 1970.
Tramways merged with Manurewa and were called Tramurewa for a while before becoming Manurewa.
Hospital changed their name to Western Suburbs, Porirua, Porirua-Viard United and then back to Western Suburbs, by which they are now known.

1986/87 NZFA Challenge Trophy
Having controversially decided to alter the format of the Chatham Cup, the NZFA introduced in its place a so-called Challenge Cup with the
trophy to be defended first up by current holder North Shore United. However, during the annual general meeting of the NZFA in March 1987 the shape of the competition was altered. NZFA substituted the Chatham Cup with a new trophy which was awarded to North Shore United.
Commencing with its home game v Hutt Valley on Jun-28, North Shore Utd would defend the trophy at each subsequent home league match. In the event of a challenger defeating North Shore United it would then defend the trophy at all subsequent home matches until defeated. Prize money would go to the winning team of each match in the series.
