NZ Football

There are two national competitions for women's football in New Zealand, the National Women's League and the Knockout Cup.

National Women's League

The National Women's League was introduced in a genuine league format in 2002 and is played on an inter-Federation basis. There is one team representing each of New Zealand's seven federations while an eighth team - based on national age-group squads for upcoming FIFA tournaments - is sometimes included.

Knockout Cup

The Knockout Cup has been contested since 1994 and, as the name suggests, is the national club knockout competition for women. Like its male equivalent, the Chatham Cup, the competition is modeled along the lines of the FA Cup in England .

The competition is played along regional lines up until the semi finals and, in the absence of a national winter club competition, the Knockout Cup effectively determines the best women’s football club in the country.
