Football Ferns RecordsThe Football Ferns line up before their World Cup match against Brazil

The Football Ferns first international was in August 1975 against Hong Kong in the Asian Cup. A 2-0 victory was followed by wins over Australia, Malaysia and Thailand and New Zealand went home as champions.

New Zealand was among the first Women's teams to play full internationals and during the 80's boasted one of the best women's footbal sides in the world, regularly beating teams from all over the globe.

Placings of second (1981), fourth (1984), and second-equal (1987) at World Invitational Tournaments in Taiwan – the unofficial precursor to the FIFA World Cup – indicate just where New Zealand sat in the international order of women’s football at that time.

In recent years, qualifying for the FIFA Women's World Cup as Oceania Champions in 1991 and 2007, and reaching the Beijing Olympics in 2008 remain the highlights.
