Tip of the day...

Recent Changes Patrol

One way that many users like to contribute to Wikipedia is by patrolling recent changes for vandalism or other common problems. While this task can be done with a variety of tools it is as simple as looking over the Recent changes link (in your navigation box on the left side of your browser window). Subsets of Recent Changes Patrol include New Page Patrol and Special:Newimages.

Another Tip of the moment...

How to create a new page

In the searchbox, type in the name of the article you wish to create. When told that the page does not exist, click the link either in red or with the question mark.

You can also type the title as the URL in your browser's link field and get there directly:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_name

Perhaps the easiest way to start a new article is to follow a link to a page that doesn't exist yet. Depending on your settings, these links may show up as red links or have a question mark at the end of the link (red links?).

Tomorrow's tip of the day...

Where did that fact come from?

It is important that the information in Wikipedia be factual; that is, true and accurate. To ensure that this is the case, one of Wikipedia's core policies is to verify all information being presented.

Therefore, when writing, it is very important that you cite your sources! Stick to a factual style even when writing about fiction or opinions. Providing references is particularly important for controversial opinions - instead of using weasel words like some people believe... you should cite sources to help readers learn who believes what, and why.

Keep in mind that the folks at Wikipedia's Reference Desk are very knowledgeable across a wide range of subjects, and they may be able to help you track down source references to a particular detail.
