The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association Lecture

 

The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association will host a lecture by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on October 5, 2010. The lecture will take place at Mount Vermon. Invitations will be mailed to Society members containing ticket information. If you are not a Society member you may contact the Society make a reservation at (202) 543-0400. Lecture and ticket information will be available soon.

 

Frank C. Jones Reenactment Series Lecture

 

The Supreme Court Historical Society will host the 2nd Frank C. Jones Reenactment Lecture on October 21, 2010 at the Supreme Court. Invitation and ticket information will be available soon.

The Supreme Court Historical Society 35th Annual Meeting and Dinner

The Society held its 35th Annual Meeting and Dinner on Monday, June 7, 2010. The Annual Lecture speaker was The Honorable Judith S. Kaye (Retired). Chief Judge Kaye delivered a lecture entitled The Supreme Court and Justice for Children.


The Schedule of Events was:


2:00 pm - Annual Lecture The Supreme Court and Justice for Children, Judith S. Kaye (Retired)

6:00 pm - General Meeting of the Membership, Annual Trustees Meeting

7:00 pm - Reception

8:00 pm - Thirty-fifth Annual Dinner


Tours of the building were offered before and after the lecture.


At the 35th annual Meeting the Society was pleased to recognize the recipients of the Hughes-Gossett Prizes for outstanding articles published in the Journal during the past year.


The Hughes-Gossett Award for the best published submission by a student went to Connor Mullin for his article entitled "Edward Bennett Williams for the Petitioner: Profile of a Supreme Court Advocate." Mr. Mullin received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2008 and is now an Associate with the firm of Akin Gump in Washington, D.C.

The Hughes-Gossett Award for the Best Journal Article went to Professor Christopher Waldrep for his article entitled "Joseph P. Bradley's Journey: The Meaning of Privileges and Immunities." Professor Waldrep is the Jamie and Phyllis Pasker Professor of History at San Francisco State University, a position he has held since August 2000. As a professor his teaching concentrates on American Constitutional history, rights in America before the civil War, and Reconstruction. An accomplished author he has written several books and numerous articles dealing with race and violence in the United States. Professor Waldrep attended East Illinois University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973. He then earned a Masters Degree at Purdue University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1990. Currently he is working on a book about the Supreme Court, civil rights and jury discrimination, entitled Jury Discrimination: The Supreme Court, Public Opinion, and a Grassroots Fight for Racial Equality in Mississippi.
