The New York Times Reminisces
About 1960s Mormon Tabernacle
Choir Broadcast - News Release

In a front-page article in its Arts and Leisure section, The New York Times featured the Mormon Tabernacle Choir this past weekend in a story related to the choir’s 100th anniversary of broadcasting. The story, by reporter Kirk Johnson, details a 1962 broadcast of the choir from Mount Rushmore to Cold War Europe.

They stood rooted, gripped with the excitement and responsibility of the moment, and when the cue came, they opened with a song that was meant to appeal to the sensibilities of Europe — “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” composed in the 1520s by Martin Luther — followed by the stirring American anthem “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

200 Million More Historic Records See the Light of Day - News Release

As the nation’s genealogical societies gather in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference this week to share tips and tricks for finding one’s elusive ancestors, there will certainly besome clamoring over an unexpected gift from FamilySearch, a world leader in historic records preservation and access. FamilySearch announced the addition of over 200 million new searchable historic records representing 18 countries to its online database. The new records were added to the hundreds of millions FamilySearch published earlier this year at a similar event in Salt Lake City, Utah. The number of records on the pilot site totals 700 million. Finding Your “Roots” at Alex Haley Museum Opening - News Release

When 17-year-old violinist Joseph Matthews performed at the dedication of the Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center, he had no idea he would discover his family roots. Joseph, a high school senior from Memphis, Tennessee, was among hundreds who participated in two days of festivities at the Interpretive Center located behind Mr. Haley’s boyhood home in Henning, Tennessee. A new video from Mormon Messages tells the story of Chris Williams, whose wife and two children were killed by a teenage drunk driver in 2007 following a family dinner with friends. Public Invited to Attend Kyiv
Ukraine Temple Open House - News Release

The public is invited to tour the newly completed Kyiv Ukraine Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the first temple of the Church built in Eastern Europe. The First Presidency of the Church has announced a public open house beginning Saturday, 7 August 2010, and continuing through Saturday, 21 August 2010, excluding Sundays. Public tours are available on Mondays from 8:00 to 17:00, and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00 to 20:00. Full Story

Mormons Remember Pioneering Heritage - News Release

The contemporary pioneering journey was completed in eight hours on a trans-Atlantic flight from France to Salt Lake City, a startling contrast to the months-long expeditions endured by the 80,000 pioneers who migrated to the Utah mountains from 1847 through 1869. Laura, 15, and a second-generation member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in her native France, arrived in Utah this summer as an English student but found herself involved in a youth activity, a four-day pioneer trek commemorating the tedious journeys of the early Utah settlers. New Mormon.org Brings Mormons to the Forefront - News Release

Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are known the world over for knocking on people’s doors to share the gospel. Now people interested in the faith can figuratively knock on Mormons’ doors on the Internet to better understand their beliefs.

In a revolutionary new launch of Mormon.org 4.0, 2,000 Mormons have completed profiles, 13,000 more are in process, explaining why they live their faith and why they are a Mormon. That number is expected to eventually jump to 100,000 as the Church continues to ask its members on LDS.org to consider sharing their faith on Mormon.org.

Art an Integral Part of Visualizing The Book of Mormon - News Release

Historic Speech at BYU by Catholic Cardinal


In a historic speech given at Brigham Young University before an appreciative audience of many thousands of students, faculty and Church leaders, Cardinal Francis George, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, eloquently argued the need to defend religious freedom.  “The question of freedom lies at the heart of modern society’s deepest conflicts,” Cardinal George said, “because it always lies at the heart of who we are as creatures made in the image and likeness of a God who loves us freely.” Full Story
