Click here for the Church's Japan siteElder Heber J. Grant, then a member of the Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and three missionaries arrived in Japan in August 1901. That same year, they established the Church's first mission in Asia with headquarters in Tokyo. In April 1903, the first Latter-day Saint meeting convened in Tokyo with about 300 people in attendance. Missionary work was discontinued during World War II, but after the war missionary efforts were resumed.
The first Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Asia was dedicated in April 1964 by Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, then of the Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In August 1975, construction of the Tokyo Temple was announced by Church President Spencer W. Kimball to 9,800 members in Tokyo. One observer wrote, "A few of the older Saints had been listening to the prophet's address with their eyes closed. When they heard the translation of the prophet's announcement, they slowly opened their eyes . . . folded their arms, bowed their heads, and cried." The temple was dedicated in October 1980.
