Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who teaches the Summer Program classes? What is the faculty/student ratio?
Instructors for the Summer Program are selected primarily from our regular degree program faculty. All of our faculty are working filmmakers, writers, producers or critics. Our classes typically have one instructor for ten students. All production classes also have course assistants to help with equipment check-out and usage, and production processes.

Q. Are these classes for college credit?
All classes in the Summer Program are regular elective courses in the School of Cinematic Arts and offer university credits. These courses will be on an official USC transcript upon successful completion of the program.

Q. Is Financial Aid available for the Summer Program Classes?
Unfortunately, USC sponsored financial aid is not available for summer class.

Q. Do I have to provide my own camera, film and processing, or digital and/or film stock?
The Summer Program provides all cameras, film and processing, and digital and/or film stock. Some students elect to bring their own camera or other equipment.

Q. I have been working for a few years in film. What is available for me?
We have students who have worked in the industry, but have been sidetracked from their original goal of filmmaking, and want to reconnect with their dream. We have production courses for all levels of ability and interests. Our writing courses are designed for both the beginning writer and the writer experienced with works in-progress.

Q. What is the cost of Seminars, Program Events and Workshops?
All Summer Program seminars, events and workshops are available to enrolled program students at no additional charge.

Q. What is the cost of classes?
Tuition is the same for any course in the University and is based on the number of units in your desired class. Summer 2010 tuition at USC is one thousand two hundred and ninety nine dollars per unit. You can multiply that by the number of units you are going to sign up for to determine your tuition fees. At the end of each online detailed class description you will find the number of units for each class as well as the dates, days and times it meets.

Q. Is University-owned housing available?
University-owned housing is available (from $300 to $1,000 for six weeks). Each year ample housing has been available. There is a tram service to nearby housing facilities and security escorts for late hours. For more information about housing, please visit their website at: http://housing.usc.edu/

Q. What is the application process?
The application form is located on this website. All required information (with exception of the additional documents needed for minor students) is included in the application. Each application will be reviewed for both accuracy and to verify that your experience and goals match your chosen course(s). You will be required to submit a 250 – 400 word essay during this application process. We suggest that you prepare this early and have it ready when applying. Please remember, the application process is based solely on this essay so it must clearly articulate your reasons for wanting to attend the School of Cinematic Arts Summer Program as well as biographical information (previous experience, education, etc.) Once we have reviewed your application, you will receive notification on whether or not you have been accepted, and confirmation of your course choice dependent upon availability.

Please note: Most courses remain open until the start of the program, but some fill more quickly.

As you may know, it is normally very difficult to gain admittance to USC School of Cinematic Arts for the regular school year, which is why the Summer Program provides this unique learning environment that gives all students the tools to find and pursue their filmmaking dreams.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
