John Barton (theologian)

Reverend Professor John Barton is the Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at Oriel College, Oxford.[1] He delivers the lecture series: Aspects of the Biblical Canon.[2]

Professor Barton is an ordained deacon and priest in the Church of England, is a canon theologian at Winchester Cathedral and a member of the Church of England General Synod where he represents Oxford University clergy. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Theology from Bonn University. [3] He also has positions as Governor and Chairman of the Board of Studies at Cuddesdon and as General Editor for Oxford University Press, amongst others. His research interests lie in Old Testament Prophets; Biblical Ethics; Canon; Biblical Interpretation; Old Testament Theology.[4]
