Launched in 1987 by Time Inc., Parenting is a magazine for mothers published in the United States. The monthly publication offers advice to mothers with children ages 0 to 12, and information is found under headings such as Kids' Health, Family Life, All Yours, The Mom Exchange, Mom-Tested, and Ages+Stages, which provides specific information for every age range. Well-known Parenting magazine contributors include Dr. William Sears, an American pediatrician and author of more than 30 parenting books; and Dr. Claire McCarthy, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the pediatrics department at the Martha Eliot Health Center of greater Boston.

With a total average circulation of 2,150,000 and an audience of more than 11 million, Parenting is the flagship of The Parenting Group family, which includes the monthly Babytalk magazine and its siblings Babytalk Mom-to-Be and Babytalk First Months; the Parenting.com website; MomConnection [1], an online community of moms who take surveys for charity; and a sampling and custom publishing unit.

In conjunction with Sesame Workshop, The Parenting Group exclusively distributes Sesame Street Magazine as a monthly supplement to subscribers of Parenting magazine.

Many of the features in the magazine are reproduced on its website, Parenting.com. The site also features a Pregnancy Planner, with fetal development photos, customized newsletters, and pregnancy info synchronized to a mother's due date; a Baby Namer tool, with thousands of name descriptions by baby-naming experts Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran; a fertility calculator, buying guides, podcasts, and The Parenting Post blog, along with resources for health & safety and child development.

In January 1997, The Parenting Group relocated from San Francisco to New York City, where Janet Chan was named editor-in-chief of Parenting and editorial director of The Parenting Group. She guided the repositioning of Parenting in May 2003 to reflect a broader, deeper focus on moms, constituting the boldest cover-to-cover evolution in the history of the magazine.[2]

In 2003, Parenting was awarded the industry's highest honor – a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in the 2 million+ category – "the best of the biggest."

Under the leadership of publisher Jeff Wellington, Parenting followed up its National Magazine Award-winning year by taking over parenting category ad page leadership from long-time competitor Parents in 2004. That multi-year growth story won Parenting placement on Adweek magazine's 2005 "Hot List," which acknowledges the ten best performers in the magazine industry.[3]

In May 2004, Zagat Survey teamed up with Parenting magazine to release its first U.S. Family Travel Guide. Developed by families for families, the guide offers travel advice with family-oriented ratings and reviews for more than 1000 sites and attractions, including amusement parks, ballparks, historic sites & monuments, national parks, zoos and more. The guide also covers family-friendly hotels and restaurants.[4]

Live with Regis and Kelly partnered with Parenting on their 2007 Beautiful Baby Search. The winner of the contest received a $5,000 prize and appears on the cover of an upcoming issue of Parenting.

In March 2007, Time Inc. sold 18 of its magazines to the Sweden-based Bonnier Group, including Parenting magazine. Time Inc.'s Parenting Group and Time4 Media titles have combined with Bonnier's U.S. magazine partner, World Publications, to form a new company called Bonnier Corporation.[5]
