Welcome!

Hello Scope creep, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. Hi, just a note--Wikipedia is not a collection of source material. For that, you might want to check out our sister project, Wikisource. They already had the text of The Cornelian there, so I've deleted the version you posted here. Best wishes, Meelar (talk) 21:15, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect bypassation

Hi, I noticed that you made an edit to bypass a redirect at Pattern matching. However, WP:REDIRECT specifically forbids editing solely to avoid redirects - it introduces needsless verbiage at a net heavier load on the servers. Please bear this in mind when you are pondering circumventing redirects. --Sam Pointon 22:34, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

My mistake - it was adding a whole new link, not just piping. I should look at the diffs closer. --Sam Pointon 22:36, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tobacco Smoking

I see that you have made major contributions to the Tobacco smoking page on Wikipedia and I have a question. Do you know anything about tobacco farm subsidies as they relate to the government fight against smoking? --GoOdCoNtEnT 20:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] British linkfixing

Since [[United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland|British]] wikilinks to a redirect, wouldn't it be simpler to just make your edits point to United Kingdom? Or am I missing something? --DeLarge 22:19, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Naw, I don't think so. There is 3 seperate phases of brits, most of them cover that (80%). There is also the British empire, which is in the second period. I think it would blur it. If you could identiy which articles relate to brits later than 1922, the modern era and wasn't antyhing to do with army, then you would get 80% of them, and the link could be put in there. i think 10% 300 or so, is 1700 stuff. I think this is my last disamg gaf. (scope_creep 19:37, 5 August 2006 (UTC))

I reiterate the OP. Please stop disambigging to a redirect. Eitehr fix the link properly, or leave it as it is. - UtherSRG (talk) 20:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Speedy delete" call

With regards to this edit:

Please note that "non notable" is not a criteria for speedy deletion. Failure to assert notability is. [edit] Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/The_NESkimos

Could you also look at your vote on the NESkimos artical? The arguments for a keep are there, but to recap for you, 1. The artical passes one, maybe two, points, however it only needs to pass ONE. 2. Notable sources have been cited.

Thank you very much!

[edit] XPLANE

Regarding your vote for deletion: I reviewed the Wikipedia deletion policy and did not see "notable" as a requisite criteria for inclusion. [edit] Re: Help with creating maps

Hello Scope creep,

Thanks for the contact. Thinking hard how exactly I can get across the map-making process, I think the first question I should ask should be if you are familliar with Adobe Illustrator or other vector based graphics software? [edit] AfDs

On November 18., you contributed to 78 different AfD debates over 9 hours, some of them several times. I admire your industry--and your remarkable range of interests--but one thing that would help us all, is that if you failed to find sources for an article, tell us where you looked so the work doesn't have to be duplicated. [edit] Scottish Junior football

You recently contributed to an AfD for several Scottish Junior Football Association teams, you are aware that Junior football does not mean youth football in Scotland Aren't you?King of the NorthEast 00:01, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Do you actually have any knowledge about Scottish football outwith the SPL or are you just another ignorant user who wants to rid wikipedia of any articles with are of no relevance to you personally?

Junior football is a very valued level of football where local communities can go along and get involved with their local team and feel like the can influence to help the local area. Please can you put any respond on my usertalk page, thanks Dreamweaverjack (talk) 04:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD edit summaries

Please use your edit summaries. Further, adding a comment either for or against is not at all a minor edit. Rather, put a summary, even just 'delete' or 'keep'. [edit] AFD

If you're going to be an AFD regular from now on, I think we all would appreciate it if you would familiarize yourself better with policy documents. For instance, "hail to the speedy" is really unnecessary and misleading when articles are not eligible for an actual speedy deletion. Speedy is not for getting rid of stuff you don't like faster. Also, when making arguments about notability, try to generalize a little less and invoke policy a little more. We're not asking for your opinion of the person, we're asking for your evaluation of the article and its conformance to guidelines. Thanks! --Dhartung | Talk 19:12, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] David M. Broome notability

I've deleted the speedy tag from the article David M. Broome because I believe the references in the article at least presume to give some indication for real notability. Please feel free to prod or send to WP:AFD if you continue to disagree.

After much struggling with the author about the speedy tag, he's gotten the message and now seems to understand how things work here. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 22:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Meat shoot speedy tag

Hi there, I've declined the speedy tag here although I absolutely agree that the article is original research. However OR is not a sufficient reason for speedying, and I suggest going through WP:PROD or WP:AFD instead. Incidentally, when tagging an article it's a good idea to warn the originating editor that you've done so. I guess you applied the tag manually? [edit] Speedy deletion of List of places in East Renfrewshire

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on List of places in East Renfrewshire requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Mblumber (talk) 13:34, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Prod

I've put a prod tag on Achnacloich, Isle of Skye. There are numerous sub-hamlets in the system that are plucked out of gazetteers and unlikely ever to become meaningful articles. Ben MacDui 07:21, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Achnaluachrach, and Achnaluacharch

Hi Scope Creep, I assume these two actually refer to the same place - can you confirm? If so can you redirect the one with the mis-spelling to the one without, as it's not obvious to me. If they are not, then I think a {{distinguish}} template is fairly essential! Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:49, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Um, just a thought, in future could you make sure that entries are not "crap", before adding articles. I suggest that making sure that a place exists is a prerequisite for starting an article. A number of users have raised concerns in the past that "non-places" are being added all too frequently. Please see this discussion at Wikiproject Scotland. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 15:43, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Achnaluachrach is listed in a book of Scottish Place Names, from the Gaelic: achadh ("field") & luachair ("rushes"); and I've found it on a map. The second one my be a typo, as it is not in the book nor the map.Pyrotec (talk) 16:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
It strikes me that Achnaluachrach, Sutherland is a single farm (is it current or a ruin?) and the Glen Spean Lodge Hotel at Roybridge is at Achluachrach (map). Both of the names used in this header are mis-spelt. Neither is worthy of an article! Better to have a Roybridge article, which could mention the hotel, a hostel (Àite Cruinnichidh) and an impressive gorge on the river - I can recommend all 3. Finavon (talk) 18:09, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Scope creep, no probs, I didnt realise you were involved with such a herculean task, so I was maybe a bit snappy too. But I still think these borderline places need to be checked, not only as to whether they exist, but as Finavon comments, whether they merit an article in the first place. I don't know how feasible that is, (without actually going there!) but personally I would err on the side of caution. Verifiability is after all WP's most fundamental policy. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 08:40, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good, the OS maps are really detailed, and up to date too. Keep up the good work! Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 16:28, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Small villages

Whilst your industry is admirable I wonder if you would mind checking that the OS grid references you provide for Highland villages are accurate and that the OS map links there? Also, please note that villages on Skye fall under Category:Skye Villages. Thanks. Ben MacDui 12:22, 1 January 2009 (UTC).

A little research is a wonderful thing. Sconser is hardly "remote" in the context of the west Highlands. As you later note, it is on the main road. Category:Villages in Highland is very large and needs attention. This is why Skye villages are placed in Category:Skye Villages. If you are going to cut and paste text for numerous articles on these tiny places, you might at least save others the trouble of having to change this every time. Please also note that "Isle of Skye" is a redirect, this being a colloquial expression. The islands name is Skye. Thank-you. Ben MacDui 07:22, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Please not that Ross-shire has not been a county since 1889. Better to use Wester Ross, Ross and Cromarty etc. Ben MacDui 07:51, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

[edit] The Food Channel

This may well fail WP:WEB but the standard for speedy deletion is stricter than that. Specifically "The criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source. If the claim's credibility is unclear, you can improve the article yourself, propose deletion, or list the article at articles for deletion." The criteria also specifically state that this "is a lower standard than notability". In general this is taken to mean that if there are suggestions that it could meet notablity requirements then it shouldn't be speedied. The two sources indicate why it may be notable. Additionally the article also mentions a newsletter which was published regularly for a long time which also indicates to me it may be notable. Finally it's been around for a while with some pretty regular editors have edited it, and has been the subject of discussion at WP:RfD so if it were an obvious speedy I'm sure someone else would've tagged it. Yes I accept this is a border line case but all-in-all, for the little extra effort involved, I think this is worth taking to WP:PROD or WP:AfD. Dpmuk (talk) 10:13, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

The survey takes only 6 minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist us in analyzing the results of the survey; the WMF will not use the information to identify you.

  • If this invitation  also appears on other accounts you  may  have, please complete the  survey  once only.
  • If this has been sent to you in error and you have never patrolled new pages, please ignore it.

Please click HERE to take part.
Many thanks in advance for providing this essential feedback.
