The Alabama Democratic Party is the local branch of the Democratic Party in the state of Alabama. It is presently chaired by Joe Turnham.
Federally, Alabama has not voted for a Democrat for President since Jimmy Carter was the nominee in 1976. In Congress, Democrats hold two out of Alabama's seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and do not hold either of the state's U.S. Senate seats.
In state elections, it is the majority party in the Alabama state legislature, currently controlling both chambers. However, Democrats are the minority party in statewide offices. Of 19 statewide appellate court positions, Democrats only maintain the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Sue Bell Cobb). Of seven statewide executive offices, Democrats hold the following:
- Lt. Governor (Jim Folsom, Jr.)
- Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries (Ron Sparks)
Alabama also elects statewide a three member Public Service Commission (a regulatory agency) in which the Party holds all three positions.
Locally, Democrats are the majority party, holding about 65% of county offices, including circuit and district judges, circuit clerks, sheriffs, county commissions, school boards, coroners and various tax and revenue positions.
