Warrenton is a town in Warren County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 811 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1779, it is the county seat of Warren County[3]. It is home to one of the campuses of Vance-Granville Community College.

Warrenton is also the birthplace of former North Carolina U.S. Senator Josiah Bailey, Georgia U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Braxton Bragg and Thomas Bragg.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 811 people, 402 households, and 221 families residing in the town. The population density was 921.1 people per square mile (355.8/km²). There were 472 housing units at an average density of 536.1/sq mi (207.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 60.42% White, 36.25% African American, 1.23% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.62% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.

There were 402 households out of which 18.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% were non-families. 42.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 26.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the town the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 30.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 72.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,618, and the median income for a family was $40,179. Males had a median income of $27,857 versus $24,861 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,654. About 10.2% of families and 14.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.5% of those under age 18 and 11.5% of those age 65 or over.
