These are the articles, pictures, and other contributions that showcase the polished result of the collaborative efforts that drive Wikipedia. All featured content undergoes a thorough review process to ensure that it meets the highest standards and can serve as an example of our end goals. Hurricane Epsilon viewed from the International Space Station
The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history, shattering previous records on repeated occasions. The impact of the season was widespread and ruinous with at least 2,280 deaths and record damages of over $100 billion USD. The five major hurricanes that made landfallDennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma — were responsible for most of the destruction. The most catastrophic effects of the season were felt on the United States' Gulf Coast, where a 30-foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina caused devastating flooding, and in Guatemala, where Hurricane Stan caused deadly mudslides. The season officially began on June 1, 2005, and lasted until November 30, 2005, although effectively the season persisted into January 2006 due to continued storm activity. A record twenty-eight tropical and subtropical storms formed, of which a record fifteen became hurricanes. (more...)

Featured list: List of Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes

Hurricane Isabel viewed from space
This is a list of all recorded Atlantic hurricanes that have reached Category 5, the highest classification of tropical cyclone intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Category 5 storms are the most catastrophic hurricanes that can form, and occur only about once every three years on average in the Atlantic basin. Only four times — in the 1960, 1961, 2005 and 2007 hurricane seasons — have multiple Category 5 hurricanes formed. Only in 2005 have more than two Category 5 storms formed, and only in 2007 has more than one made landfall at Category 5 strength.
