Police plan to hit back with tough new protest tactics

Stop-and-search strategies and water cannon will be considered in a sweeping review of failed police tactics as Scotland Yard prepares for months of violent demonstrations. As a large-scale criminal investigation began into events at the tuition fees protest in London, officers said that they were planning an “intrusive and robust” response to stop suspected troublemakers causing mayhem. The latest demonstration culminated in an attack on the car in which the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were passengers. Senior officers confirmed that royal protection staff were within seconds of drawing weapons as one mob member poked a stick through the window and into the ribs of the Duchess. The Prime Minister said he was “very concerned” about the “regrettable” security
